Rooted in Purpose: Growing a Family Legacy One Tree at a Time

Husband and wife Chris Butt and Melissa Varner are the ambitious co-owners of Monster Tree Service of Greater Boulder. Melissa earned her Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of Kentucky and works full-time as a contractor in the pharmaceutical industry. Chris also earned his  Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky—this time in Neurobiology—and works full-time as a neuropharmacologist. For most couples, two Ph.D.s and two demanding careers would be more than enough. But Chris and Melissa felt a pull toward something bigger, something that would allow them to build a future not just for themselves, but for their family.

They launched Monster Tree Service of Greater Boulder in 2022 with the dream of creating a legacy business for their children—something steady, meaningful, and rooted (no pun intended) in their shared values. Well, they have accomplished just that. Their eldest, Gavin (23), now runs the day-to-day operations at the company. By day, he’s the reliable point person customers turn to; by night, he switches gears and plays bass guitar for the Denver-based band Stovetop Gemini (go give their new EP “Karyo” a listen!). Their second child, Kendall (16), who has Down syndrome, attends the Barred Academy, otherwise known as the “Owl School,” in Louisville. Outside of school, she fills her schedule with ballet and swimming.

Despite their busy routines, the whole family shares one favorite tradition: skiing together. Whether gliding down icy slopes or laughing their way through a challenging run, those mountain days are a reminder of why the business matters so much. It gives them the freedom and stability to enjoy the moments that truly matter.

Chris and Melissa’s commitment to care doesn’t stop with their own children. They’ve shaped Monster Tree Service around the idea of caring for their community as well. Their team removes hazardous trees that threaten homes and safety, and they nurture the health of remaining trees by protecting them from pests and disease. Their goal is simple: to help your yard thrive so you and your family can enjoy your space with confidence.

As your neighbors, Chris and Melissa hope that when you have concerns about your trees—whether it’s safety, health, or just peace of mind—you’ll consider their family-run business. After all, Monster Tree Service of Greater Boulder isn’t just about trees; It’s about family, legacy, and taking care of the people who matter.
