Colin’s Corner: Winterizing House and Home

Hello everyone and welcome to another installment of Colin’s Corner!

Well, 2025 went by in a blink of an eye! Cannot believe we are rounding the corner to 2026!

Time to make those New Year’s resolutions. I’m going to exercise more, eat less, no snacks at night, blah blah blah! Let’s come up with a more realistic resolution list.

We need to batten down the hatches and keep our energy costs down. There are a few things you can do to make your house weathertight. The first thing I recommend is to feel the trim around your window. If you feel cold air coming between the wall and the trim, run a bead of caulk around the window trim. That will keep a lot of the cold air out. If you feel that the air is coming in through the window, you may want to try the old standby of plastic, unless you are ready to replace the windows in your house. This is never an easy solution, but it has worked for many people for many years.

Another thing that will make a difference is to buy foam pads that fit in your outlets. You would be surprised how much air comes through on the exterior outlets. This is because there is no insulation behind them. These items can be purchased at one of the big box stores and are very easy to install.

But if you want to bring in the big guns, I recommend contacting Eversource and have them do a no-cost energy assessment for your home. They offer a full evaluation of your energy losses and can save you a lot of money on your heating bill. To get started, you can contact them at:
