Pool Care Misconceptions: Expert Tips for a Better Pool Experience
Owning a pool is a dream for many homeowners, and whether you’ve built one or bought a home with one, you want it ready whenever you are. Many people enjoy caring for their pool, but there’s far more to keeping water healthy than most realize. Below are common misconceptions and the truth behind them.
1. All I need to check is chlorine and pH.
FALSE.
While chlorine and pH are essential, several other factors impact water balance, sanitation, and equipment longevity. Alkalinity keeps pH stable. When alkalinity is too low, pH often rises and water becomes corrosive, damaging equipment and pool finishes. Stable pH also ensures chlorine can sanitize effectively; when pH is high, chlorine becomes far less effective.
Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) acts like sunscreen for chlorine, protecting it from UV burn-off. If your chlorine level is always low despite frequent additions, stabilizer may be too low. Phosphates, commonly introduced by rain and hose water, act as food for algae. High phosphates require more chlorine, contribute to cloudy water, and can cause scaling on tile and equipment. Metals can enter the pool through hose water, salt, or aging equipment. Elevated metal levels can stain pool surfaces and damage equipment. Properly monitoring all these factors is essential to maintaining healthy, balanced water.
2. Liquid chlorine is messy, so I use chlorine tabs.
TRUE and FALSE.
Liquid chlorine can be messy, but chlorine tablets aren’t necessarily better. Most tabs contain about 50% stabilizer along with other chemicals which include chlorine. While some stabilizer is helpful, too much prevents chlorine from working effectively. The downside is that stabilizer cannot be reduced except through dilution, meaning partially draining and refilling the pool. Many pools that turn green despite showing high chlorine levels are actually suffering from excessive stabilizer caused by overuse of tabs. Liquid chlorine avoids this issue and allows stabilizer levels to be managed appropriately.
3. To swim year-round, I need a heater and must run it daily.
FALSE.
Solar blankets work extremely well, especially in sunny states like Florida. They help retain heat overnight and allow the sun to naturally warm the water during the day. This makes them far more cost-effective than running a heater every day. If you want to extend your swim season, solar covers and efficient heaters offer flexible, affordable options.
