New Year’s Resolutions: Why We Start Strong, Why We Slip, and How This Year Can Be Different
Every year, right after the holiday dishes are washed, and the last of the Christmas treats mysteriously disappear, many of us make the same promise to ourselves: This year, I’m getting healthy. We feel the momentum of a new beginning, the excitement of a clean slate, and the hope that maybe, just maybe, this will be the year we finally follow through. But then life settles back in. Schedules fill up. Old habits creep back. Motivation softens. Before we know it, February arrives, and that powerful January energy feels like a distant memory. If you’ve experienced this, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s one of the most human things we do.
Most New Year’s resolutions fail not because we lack willpower, but because we try to change everything at once. It’s a little like trying to run a marathon without ever training. We’re enthusiastic, but the plan is unrealistic from the start. True change usually comes from small, steady commitments made with patience, kindness, and a willingness to learn about ourselves along the way. And that’s exactly what we want to encourage this January at Green Country Herbs: not perfection, but participation. Not pressure, but progress. Not guilt, but growth.
We’re starting the year with several courses designed to help people understand their bodies and build healthier routines in realistic, enjoyable ways. Our General Nutrition class will explore the foundations of nourishment, including how carotenoids and catechins may help combat visceral fat and support overall wellness. It’s not about diets or deprivation, it’s about learning how food works with your body instead of against it.
For those who want to take their wellness further, we’re offering a class on herbal tincture formulation. Herbal medicine has been practiced for generations, and once you understand the principles, it becomes both empowering and practical. Students will learn how tinctures are made, why certain herbs are chosen, and how simple they can be to incorporate into daily life.
Of course, wellness isn’t only about what we eat or drink; it’s also about how we move. That’s why we’re continuing to host yoga sessions with Lacy twice a week. Her classes are accessible for all ages and fitness levels, offering gentle movement and strengthening that support longevity and eases the natural changes our bodies experience over time. Many students are surprised by how much better they feel after just a few weeks.
And because life should always have room for joy, we’re also teaching a Sourdough Cinnamon Roll Baking class. Yes, you read that right. Health isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance. A warm cinnamon roll shared with family or enjoyed after a long week can be just as nourishing to the spirit as leafy greens are to the body. We believe every wellness journey should leave room for moments like that.
At the heart of any New Year’s resolution is the desire to become a better version of ourselves more intentional, more energized, more balanced. While determination plays a part, faith and community matter just as much. When we surround ourselves with people who encourage us, teach us, and walk with us, the journey becomes easier and far more enjoyable.
So as you step into this new year, give yourself grace. Commit to learning. Celebrate small victories. And remember that health isn’t a destination, it’s a relationship you build with yourself over time. This January, let’s make commitments we can actually keep. Let’s choose habits that support us, courses that inspire us, and a lifestyle that feels human and sustainable. And if along the way you enjoy a cinnamon roll or two, well… that’s just good balance.
