Is Your Heating System Ready for A Cold Snap?

In Central Texas, February can be deceiving. We’ll get a few warm afternoons, the heater barely runs, and it feels like winter is behind us. But after years of working on heating systems in this area, I can tell you with confidence—February is still one of the most common months for heating emergencies.

The reason is simple: this is when furnaces that haven’t been used much suddenly get pushed hard.

Many systems sit relatively quiet through early winter, then get called into action during a late-season freeze. That’s often when hidden issues show up. I regularly see furnaces with worn components, restricted airflow, or electrical parts that are just hanging on—until that first cold night puts them to the test.

One of the biggest concerns I talk to homeowners about is carbon monoxide safety. Furnaces that haven’t been inspected can develop cracked heat exchangers, loose connections, or ventilation problems that allow carbon monoxide to enter the home. Because it’s odorless and invisible, people don’t always realize there’s an issue until a detector goes off—or someone doesn’t feel right.

Another common problem I see this time of year is airflow restriction. Dirty filters, dust buildup, or closed vents can cause a furnace to work much harder than it should. That extra strain often leads to uneven heating, higher energy bills, or the system shutting down right when you need it most.

Electrical components are also more vulnerable during late winter. Cold temperatures, combined with frequent on-and-off cycles, can expose weak igniters, failing capacitors, or stressed wiring. These are often small, manageable repairs if they’re caught early—but they can turn into major problems if they’re ignored.

That’s why I always recommend a professional heating system check before winter truly lets go. A simple inspection can confirm that your system is running safely, efficiently, and reliably—so if another cold snap rolls through, your home is ready.

In Central Texas, winter doesn’t always follow the calendar. Being proactive now can save you from emergency calls later and give you peace of mind knowing your home—and your family—are protected.
