Love on a Plate: Valentine’s Day Dishes with an American Twist

Valentine’s Day is about connection—slowing down, sharing a meal, and showing love in ways that feel personal. As a longtime purveyor of American cuisine, I’ve always believed some of the most meaningful expressions of love come from familiar flavors prepared with intention. At Piney Creek Chop House, February is one of my favorite months because it gives us the chance to celebrate romance without pretense—just honest food, thoughtfully done.

American cuisine is often misunderstood as simple or casual, but at its heart it’s deeply emotional. It tells stories of place, family, and tradition. For Valentine’s Day, I love leaning into classic American dishes and giving them a subtle twist—something comforting, yet special enough to feel like an occasion.

Take the steak, for example. A beautifully cooked Texas-raised ribeye, seasoned simply and finished with a pat of herb butter, can be just as romantic as any French preparation. Pair it with a red wine reduction or a touch of roasted garlic, and suddenly you have a dish that feels indulgent without losing its soul. It’s bold, confident, and meant to be shared—much like love itself.

Seafood also plays a starring role this time of year. Pan-seared scallops with a corn purée nod to Southern roots while keeping things elegant. Or consider a perfectly roasted salmon with a maple-mustard glaze—sweet, savory, and unmistakably American. These flavors are approachable, yet layered, and they invite conversation at the table.

And let’s not forget dessert, where romance really shines. Chocolate may be the expected choice, but I’m partial to desserts that surprise a little. A warm bourbon pecan pie or a cast-iron apple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream brings nostalgia into the moment. These are desserts that say, “I know you,” which might be the most romantic message of all.

For me, Valentine’s Day isn’t about extravagance—it’s about care. It’s about sourcing good ingredients, honoring the seasons, and cooking with purpose. Whether you’re celebrating at a restaurant or around your own table at home, I encourage you to choose dishes that feel true to you and the people you love

Because at the end of the day, love doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s just a great meal, shared with the right person, right here in Bastrop.
