Building Custom Homes Where Dreams Take Shape
When Jack and Elaine Lucas began planning their retirement, they knew they wanted more than just a new address. They wanted a lifestyle that matched their next chapter. Coming from Northern Virginia, the couple was ready for a change. “We were looking at all the taxes (state income, property, even personal property for cars) and I told Elaine, ‘Honey, we’re leaving!’” Jack laughs.
The search led them on a multi-state exploration, guided by Elaine’s carefully crafted spreadsheets comparing costs, climates, and communities. She wanted four distinct seasons and access to water. When they discovered Fairfield Glade during a family vacation in 2005, the area’s natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and welcoming atmosphere made a lasting impression. “Our son, Patrick, caught his first fish here,” Elaine recalls with a smile. “We had it mounted and everything. That memory stuck with us.”
Years later, when the time came to make their move, the Lucases returned to Fairfield Glade and began the exciting process of building their dream home. After researching local builders, they reached out to several before meeting Heath Swallows of Swallows Developers, Inc. “We drove up and down Peavine, jotting down names of builders,” Jack explains. “We had a specific list of features we wanted, including an elevator. Some builders didn’t want to take on that kind of project or deal with the potential excavation challenges, but Heath was ready to tackle it.”
Their property’s slope and elevation presented unique design and construction hurdles, but Heath and his team approached every obstacle with creativity and care. “He worked with other professionals to find the best solutions,” Elaine says. “We wanted to be close to the water, and Heath came up with an ingenious design to make it work. It wasn’t easy, but the end result is beautiful.”
The Lucases credit Swallows Developers for the exceptional quality and collaboration throughout the build. “The subcontractors Heath brings to the table are outstanding,” Elaine notes. “The flooring company did a wonderful job tying colors and materials together, and the cabinet designers delivered beautiful, customized cabinetry that makes our home truly unique.”
Although excavation and grading took longer than expected, the couple said Heath kept them informed every step of the way. “He was upfront from the beginning about the complexity,” Jack says. “Even when things took longer, we always felt confident in his communication and commitment.”
For the Lucases, who both spent their careers in high-level government work, attention to detail was a must. “Coming from Northern Virginia, we had high expectations,” Jack admits. “We wanted quality craftsmanship, and Heath delivered that.”
Now, as their new lakefront home nears completion, they look forward to settling into the community that first captured their hearts two decades ago. “It’s exactly what we hoped for—a peaceful place with friendly people and plenty to do,” says Elaine, who is eager to explore hobbies like sewing, photography, and bridge. Jack, an avid reader, adds with a grin, “I’m still working remotely, but I think I can make time for a good view and maybe another fishing story.”
From start to finish, Swallows Developers turned the Lucases’ vision into a reality that perfectly blends functionality, beauty, and thoughtful design.
