Neighbors Gather to Learn About ‘BLTs’ With Award-Winning Neurosurgeon, Dr. Arthur Jenkins

Neighbors ventured out into the cold on a Sunday morning to learn practical tips for preventing back injuries from award-winning neurosurgeon Dr. Arthur Jenkins. Dr. Jenkins — a Greenwich parent and Professor Emeritus at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City — explained how the spine functions and why bending, lifting, and turning (“BLT”) can lead to muscle strain, injury, or chronic back pain.

“Nothing against bacon,” he joked, “but remember: no BLTs — and you’ll be less likely to hurt your back when lifting something.”

Residents asked thoughtful questions about their own experiences with back pain, from concerns involving children and athletes to issues affecting adults of all ages. Dr. Jenkins, who has worked with the NY Fire Department, NY Police Department, and the New York Jets, brought his expertise to life with a clear and engaging teaching style.

“His tone and clarity made it obvious he was an excellent professor. It felt like we were his students — he was completely engaging,” a member of the Greenwich Newcomers Club shared after the educational event (our whole community was welcomed at this free and informative gathering).

Dr. Jenkins also mentors students interested in pursuing careers in medicine. To learn more, visit jenkinsneurospine.com or contact his office.
