Find Your Place at the Presidio

In 2010, the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park was on the brink of closure after the loss of state funding threatened its future. Faced with the possible loss of an irreplaceable piece of Arizona history, the Tubac community did something extraordinary—they came together, “circled the wagons,” and forged a creative partnership that ensured the park would remain open to the public. That moment of collective action didn’t just save the park; it created a lasting legacy of community stewardship.

Today, the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park is cared for and preserved by the Friends of the Tubac Presidio, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization powered by dedicated volunteers. These individuals donate their time, skills, and passion to protect one of Arizona’s most significant historic sites.

One of the most hands-on ways to get involved is to join our Maintenance Volunteer Team, which meets every Friday morning. Often described as “the glue that holds the place together,” this team tackles a wide range of projects, from painting and carpentry to minor plumbing and repairs. “I can still be physically active, which helps my aging infrastructure, as well as make friends I can laugh with,” remarks Presidio Board Member Tom Walsh.

If you prefer working outdoors, our Garden Volunteer Team may be the perfect fit. Meeting most Tuesday mornings, these volunteers help with planting, pruning, and ongoing care of the park’s beautiful outdoor spaces. Their dedication has helped create award-winning exhibits including the Spanish Heritage Garden and the recently completed Connections Garden. These thoughtfully designed landscapes offer inspiration, beauty, and quiet reflection to thousands of visitors each year. “Gardening with the Presidio gives me the opportunity to not only do something meaningful, but also enjoyable. I love being outside, continuing to learn about Southwest flora, and being a part of this supportive team. If you’re able-bodied and willing to learn, we’d love to have you join the group,” shares Presidio Volunteer Connie Schmitz.

We are also seeking friendly, reliable volunteers to assist at the Visitors Center front desk during the spring and summer seasons. This role is ideal for those who enjoy meeting new people, providing excellent customer service, and helping guests begin their journey back in time. Front desk volunteers are often the first impression visitors have of the Presidio and the last one they remember. I’m proud of the evolution of the park,” reflects Presidio Volunteer Joan Gordon, “It’s a place that I don’t just want to survive, but to thrive. If you like meeting new people from all over the world, the front desk position is a great place to be.”

When you volunteer at Tubac Presidio, you become part of a close-knit family united by a shared commitment to preservation, education, and community. Whether you’re learning new skills, making new friends, or helping protect Arizona’s history, your time truly matters.

Join the Presidio family as a volunteer and make history in 2026!
