Spring Brings Sunshine…and Termites!

As winter fades and temperatures begin to rise, homeowners look forward to spring flowers, warmer days, and spending more time outdoors. Unfortunately, spring also marks the beginning of termite season. As a local pest and termite control company, we see firsthand how increased warmth and moisture in early spring create ideal conditions for termite activity…often before homeowners realize there’s a problem.

Termites are cold-blooded insects, meaning their activity increases as temperatures warm. In the spring, subterranean termites begin swarming, a process where reproductive termites leave their colonies to establish new ones. These swarms are often the first visible sign of a nearby infestation, but by the time swarming occurs, termites may already be causing damage inside a home’s structure. Because termites feed silently on wood from the inside out, damage can go unnoticed for months or even years.

Moisture also plays a major role. Spring rains, poor drainage, and higher humidity can soften wood and make it more attractive to termites. Homes with crawl spaces, wood-to-soil contact, or areas where moisture collects are especially vulnerable during this time of year.

What Homeowners Can Do To Reduce Their Risk:

The good news is that homeowners can take proactive steps to reduce their risk. Start by eliminating excess moisture around the home. This can include repairing leaky faucets, ensuring gutters are directing water away from the foundation, and keeping crawl spaces properly ventilated. Firewood and lumber should be stored away from the house and never in direct contact with the ground. Sealing cracks in the foundation and around utility entry points can also help limit termite access. Most importantly, consider having a professional termite inspection, especially as spring begins. Annual inspections can detect early signs of activity as well as conducive conditions before costly damage occurs. Preventative termite measures and ongoing protection plans are far more affordable than repairing structural damage after an infestation has taken hold.

Spring is a season of renewal, and protecting your home should be part of that fresh start. Staying informed and proactive now can help ensure your home remains strong, safe, and termite-free throughout the year. Call us today for a FREE evaluation!
