The Gift of Forethought: Understanding Pre-Planning in Ontario

Back to Articles

In the bustle of daily life, people often focus on planning for the immediate — the next community event, a family dinner or a home renovation. However, one of the most profound acts of care an individual can provide for their family is planning for the future. Pre-planning final arrangements is not merely about logistics; it is a meaningful gift of clarity and relief for those left behind.

Why consider pre-planning?

When a death occurs, the emotional weight on a family is immense. At that moment, making dozens of practical and financial decisions can feel overwhelming. By documenting wishes in advance, you ensure that personal choices—whether they involve a traditional burial, a celebration of life or a simple cremation—are understood. This removes the guesswork and potential for family conflict during an acutely emotional time.

Consumer protection and the power of portability

A common concern for many residents is the “what if” scenario. What if you move to a different city? What if you simply prefer a different service provider later in life? In Ontario, the law is designed with high levels of consumer protection.

Under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, pre-arranged services are highly portable. If you have established a pre-paid contract but wish to change providers, the process is regulated and transparent. Ontario law dictates that the funds held in trust or via insurance belong to the purchaser. You generally have the right to cancel an existing contract and transfer the value to a new provider. This ensures that original intentions are honoured regardless of where you choose to have the service held.

Financial security and inflation

Pre-paying for arrangements allows you to lock in current prices for services that may not be needed for many years. Under provincial law, these funds must be placed in a regulated trust account or an insurance policy where they accrue interest specifically to offset rising costs. This ensures that a family is not burdened by unexpected expenses or rising industry costs in the future.

Starting the conversation

Pre-planning is ultimately a conversation about legacy. It allows an individual to specify personal details such as a favourite song, a specific reading or giving to a charitable organization that truly reflect a life story. It provides the opportunity for a family to focus on grieving and celebrating a life lived rather than the burden of difficult and hurried decisions.
