The Secret to Long-Lasting Lashes

In the world of beauty, few things are as immediately transformative as a fresh set of eyelash extensions. They open the eyes, add instant glamour, and—perhaps my favorite benefit—shave valuable minutes off our morning routines. However, as an eyelash technician, the most common question I hear isn’t about style or length, but longevity: “How do I make them last?”

Many clients assume that retention is 100% up to the glue or the technician’s skill. While proper application is vital, the truth is that long-lasting lashes are a 50/50 partnership between the artist and the client. To get the most out of your investment, it helps to understand a little bit about the science of your natural lashes.

Understanding the Lash Cycle: First, it is important to know that your natural lashes are constantly shedding. Just like the hair on your head, eyelashes go through a growth cycle. On average, we shed between two to five natural lashes every single day. Because extensions are attached to these individual natural hairs, when the natural lash sheds, the extension goes with it. This is perfectly normal! It is why “fills” are recommended every two to three weeks—to replace the grown-out lashes and fill in the new growth.

The Golden Rule: Keep Them Clean: The biggest misconception I see in my industry is the idea that you shouldn’t get your extensions wet. In the first 24 hours, keeping them dry is helpful for the adhesive to cure, but after that? You must wash them.

Our skin produces natural oils, and our eyes collect dust and debris throughout the day. If this buildup isn’t removed, it can break down the adhesive bond prematurely, causing extensions to slide off. Worse, it can lead to eye health issues. I always advise my clients to use a lash-safe cleanser and a soft brush daily. Clean lashes are happy lashes, and happy lashes hold onto extensions much longer.

Myth: Extensions Ruin Your Natural Lashes: I also want to address the fear that extensions will damage your natural lashes. This is a myth—with a caveat. Extensions damage natural lashes only when they are applied incorrectly (too heavy or clustered together) or when they are pulled at by the client. When an experienced technician isolates each natural lash correctly and chooses a weight that your natural lash can support, your natural lashes will continue to grow and shed healthily and completely unharmed.

Ultimately, beautiful lashes are healthy lashes. Whether you prefer a natural “mascara” look or dramatic volume, the goal is always to enhance your natural beauty without compromising the health of your eyes. Treat your lashes with care, keep them clean, and they will keep you looking fabulous for weeks to come.
