Whether your water well supplies water to your home or you use it for irrigation in your yard, there are a few things to look out for which may be tale-tale signs of underlying issues.
When a pump system is functioning correctly, water pressure is smooth and consistent. Every time a tap is opened, water comes out just as it should with adequate pressure. When things go awry, there are usually five warning signs you should be on the lookout for: Low water pressure or no pressure, surging or pulsing water pressure, air in the water lines, sediment in the water, and foul odors and tastes.
You may have one or several issues simultaneously, but they all indicate an underlying problem. We’ll look at each symptom one by one and explore potential causes.
Low Water Pressure or No Pressure could be the result of sediment blocking filters or fixtures, electrical components failing resulting in inconsistent starting of your well pump, indicate a leak in the system, or a failing pump or motor.
Surging or Pulsing Water Pressure almost always indicates an issue with your pressure tank or bladder. The remedy could be as simple as adding the correct amount of air to your tank but may require a replacement if the bladder has failed. It is the result of the pump turning on and off quickly because the system cannot maintain a consistent pressure, an issue known as a “rapid cycle.” This issue should be addressed quickly as it will cause more severe damage to your pump system if left unresolved.
Air In Your Water Lines almost certainly indicates that you have a leak in the system which should also be addressed quickly. Like in the situation above, a leak in your system will cause your pump system to cycle frequently and will result in more severe damage requiring more extensive repairs.
Sediment In Your Water does not always indicate an issue with your pump system although it certainly can. It could be that you simply need a water filter, but sediment can indicate a leak or a failed bladder. As your system leaks or rapid cycles, it can stir up sediment in the well which is taken in through the pump and sent into your home.
Foul Odors And Tastes can just be a characteristic of your water, which can be treated quite easily with the proper filtration, but could also indicate the presence of bacteria. Proper well sanitation or water treatment may be necessary to resolve the issue.
