Winter Wear and Tear: What Every Driver Should Inspect This Spring

Back to Articles

Winter roads in our area can be especially tough on vehicles, and many of the most common issues we see in the shop start with something as simple as a pothole. As the snow thaws and the trees begin to get green, an after-winter seasonal checkup is a great plan to ensure your vehicle is road ready for the summer months!

When temperatures drop, moisture seeps into cracks in the pavement. As it freezes and expands, it creates potholes that can appear overnight. Hitting one—even at moderate speed—can do more than just feel jarring. It can bend wheels, damage tires, and throw off your vehicle’s suspension system. Over time, this may lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling, or vibrations you feel in the steering wheel.

Another hidden issue many drivers don’t think about is alignment. Even a single hard impact can knock your vehicle out of alignment, meaning your tires are no longer pointing exactly where they should. This not only affects how your car drives but can shorten the life of your tires significantly.

Winter conditions can also impact things you might not notice right away, like your headlights. Rough roads and repeated impacts can slightly shift headlight aim over time. You may find your lights aren’t illuminating the road as well as they used to—or worse, they could be shining into oncoming traffic. We can check your headlight’s aim to ensure that you are safely illuminating the roadway at nighttime, keeping your and your loved ones safe!

Salt, slush, and debris add another layer of wear, accelerating corrosion and putting additional strain on suspension components like shocks and struts. Even a vehicle that is five years old can start to show signs of damage from the harsh road conditions we face in the snowbelt of the Great Lakes region!

The good news is that these issues can often be caught early with a simple inspection. It’s a smart idea to have your vehicle checked for alignment, suspension wear, and overall safety. A little attention now can help prevent bigger, more expensive problems down the road—and keep your family riding safely. We proudly provide a complimentary multi-point vehicle inspection on every visit giving you a health report card of your vehicle. Be sure to ask your garage of choice for this type of check over to ensure that safety items are checked and issues are identified early.
