Planning Your Vacation with Confidence

Back to Articles

Taking a vacation in the U.S. or abroad is an activity we all look forward to. The following steps can help you plan your dream vacation with confidence:

1. Travel Documents

If traveling overseas, ensure your passport is up to date. For domestic travel, confirm your driver’s license is REAL ID–compliant or that you have another acceptable form of identification, such as a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL).

2. Air Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing air travel insurance to cover delays or unexpected disruptions. The additional cost can be worthwhile if you encounter weather issues or other unforeseen circumstances.

3. Use Your Credit Card

It is safer to use a credit card instead of a debit card due to extra protections offered by credit card providers. Additionally, speak with your travel agent to determine how much cash you should carry for gratuities or expenses in places that do not accept credit cards, especially when traveling internationally. Be sure to pay off your credit card balance when you return.

4. Key Contact Person

Ask a trusted person to collect your mail and packages while you are away, which can help prevent your home from appearing unoccupied. It is also wise to let a family member know your travel plans and where key documents are located, such as estate documents, life insurance policies, banking information, and investment records in case of an emergency.

5. Travel Alerts

Periodically review weather forecasts and travel alerts so you can adjust plans if necessary. When traveling overseas, it is especially important to review State Department travel notices at: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel.html

6. Protect Your Valuables

Store valuables in a secure pouch or wallet to reduce the risk of pickpocketing. Consider RFID-blocking wallets, purses, or pouches. Protect your phone with a rugged, waterproof case and tempered glass screen protector. Secure your data by using a strong lock-screen password, enabling encryption, using a VPN on public Wi-Fi networks, and using a phone strap to prevent theft. Avoid public USB charging ports, back up your data regularly, and consider travel insurance.

7. Take Photos

Capture everlasting memories of your trip by taking photos. After your vacation, select your favorite photos and create an album—both digital and printed—to share with family and friends.
