More Than Just Glass: Why Windshield Calibration Matters This Spring

Back to Articles

May in the Okanagan means longer days, brighter sunshine, and more time on the road. It’s also the perfect time to check in on your vehicle after a long winter — and your windshield should be at the top of that list.

Winter driving leaves its mark on your windshield. Gravel, debris, and temperature swings can create small chips that often go unnoticed — until warmer weather and rough roads cause them to spread. With the sun sitting lower in the sky during spring mornings and evenings, even minor damage can create glare and distort your view. Catching issues early can help prevent a simple repair from turning into a costly replacement.

But there’s more to your windshield than meets the eye.

What many drivers don’t realize is that modern windshields are no longer just glass — they are part of your vehicle’s safety system. Many vehicles today have a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield, typically behind the rearview mirror. This camera powers driver-assistance features like lane departure warning, forward collision alerts, and automatic emergency braking.

During a windshield replacement, the camera itself stays in place within its mounting bracket. To safely complete the installation, our technicians must access the housing around the rearview mirror, remove the cover, and disconnect the camera by releasing its electrical connector. Once the new windshield is installed, the camera is reconnected and the housing is reassembled.

Even with careful handling, the positioning of the camera relative to the new glass can shift slightly — something you wouldn’t notice by eye, but enough to affect how the system interprets the road. That’s where calibration comes in.

Calibration is the process of precisely aligning that camera, so it accurately understands its position and view of the road ahead. Technicians use specialized equipment to perform either a static calibration (using targets set up in front of the vehicle) or a dynamic calibration (completed through controlled driving conditions). This ensures your vehicle’s safety systems respond correctly when you need them most.

Without proper calibration, these features may not function as intended. A vehicle could misjudge lane position or delay a braking response — something you may not notice until it matters. That’s why calibration isn’t optional; it’s a critical part of modern windshield replacement.

At Morgan’s Glass, we’ve been serving the Vernon community for generations and stay current with the latest advancements in automotive glass. We are proud to be an accredited automotive glass provider, meeting strict industry and insurance standards. Our team ensures that every windshield replacement includes proper calibration when required, so your vehicle performs the way it was designed to.

This May, take a few minutes to inspect your windshield. Look for chips, cracks, or areas that catch the light differently — especially near the edges. Early repairs are often quick and cost-effective, helping you avoid bigger issues down the road.

Because today, your windshield isn’t just glass — it’s part of your safety system.
