We’ve all heard the saying, “what goes around comes around,” and within the realm of interior design, that couldn’t be more true.
In the past, when we walked into a renovation and saw wood cabinetry, the first strategy was to paint or replace the cabinets with a crisp white shaker-style. Clients wanted to make their space feel brighter, lighter, and more modern. The dark wood often felt like the opposite of that goal. White cabinetry became the go-to solution – it reflects light, feels clean, and has a timeless appeal.
But lately, we’re noticing a shift.
Instead of stripping spaces of their natural character, we are seeing clients embrace the character and even add more. Homeowners are leaning into warmth, texture, and authenticity. Choosing to keep the wood, highlight its grain, and create spaces that feel curated.
Character and Personalization
One of the trends we see on the rise is creating a home that tells a story.
Rather than designing spaces that feel too nice to touch anything, clients are gravitating toward interiors that feel personal and collected. This can be achieved through large-scale artwork, vintage finds, family heirlooms, or meaningful decor that adds texture. The goal is shifting away from perfection and into personality.
Earth Tones & Wood
While bright airy spaces are still desirable, the way to achieve balance in this area is evolving.
Natural light has always been center stage – large windows, open sightlines, and thoughtful floor plans that allow light to move freely. Instead of relying on the bright white and clean finishes, we are pairing natural light with warm, earthy tones that create balance.
Paint colors like Accessible Beige, Agreeable Gray, and Modern Gray offer a softer alternative to bright white. These tones create a perfect backdrop for incorporating natural materials.
Wood is arguably the most versatile element. We’re seeing warm wood cabinetry used in kitchens, wood vanities, ceiling beams, shelving, and statement range hoods. The bold wood selections add rich texture to every room.
Design From the Heart
This shift into designing with your family and your personality in mind isn’t about choosing between modern or traditional – it’s about blending the two. Clean lines can coexist with rustic finishes. Sleek lighting can hang above a reclaimed wood table on top of an antique area rug.
At the heart of it all, this trend is about how you feel in your space and creating a home that invites guests to sit down and stay a while.
