Every year, spring reminds us that renewal is natural. The flowers come back. The days get longer. Everything gets a fresh start. And yet so many of the incredible mothers I work with at my Newport Coast practice have been putting themselves last for years, sometimes decades, waiting for permission to invest in their own well-being.
As Mother’s Day approaches, I want to say something directly to those women: you deserve that fresh start too.
I’m Dr. Brandon Richland, a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in mommy makeovers here in Newport Coast, California. Every week, I sit down with mothers who tell me some version of the same story. They eat well. They exercise. They do everything right. But pregnancy and breastfeeding changed their bodies in ways that no amount of discipline can fully reverse: loose abdominal skin, separated muscles, breasts that lost their shape and volume. And along with those physical changes came something harder to talk about, a quiet loss of confidence.
That loss is more common than most people realize. Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that nearly 70% of women reported dissatisfaction with their bodies after pregnancy. For many, that dissatisfaction becomes a constant background noise, affecting how they dress, how they carry themselves, and how they feel in their own skin.
A mommy makeover is not about chasing perfection. It is about restoration. It is a personalized combination of procedures, which might include a tummy tuck to repair muscle separation and remove excess skin, a breast lift or augmentation to restore lost volume, or liposuction to address stubborn areas that simply will not respond to diet and exercise. Every plan I create is tailored to the individual woman sitting across from me, her body, her goals, and her life.
What I find most rewarding about this work is the moment a patient sees herself again. Not a different version of herself, but herself. The woman she was before pregnancy took its toll. That recognition is powerful, and it ripples outward into every part of her life. She stands taller. She shows up differently at work, with her kids, in her relationships. She stops hiding and starts living fully again.
If you have been thinking about a mommy makeover but felt guilty for wanting it, I would encourage you to reframe that thought. Mothers pour everything into their families. Choosing to restore your body and your confidence is not selfish, it is one of the most meaningful investments you can make in yourself. And spring, with its built-in theme of starting over, is the perfect time to take that step.
This Mother’s Day, consider giving yourself the gift that keeps giving, the gift of feeling like you again.
