Summer Event Trends & Hosting Tips

The summer entertaining season is officially here! Whether you are planning a shower or milestone celebration, the most memorable events are no longer about excess. They’re about atmosphere and thoughtful design.

The biggest shift we are seeing is that clients are now prioritizing guest experience just as much as the overall aesthetic. Details that make guests feel welcomed and relaxed are what leave the most memorable impression.

These are a few of our top tips for summer events.

  1. Prioritize Layering Over Matching

One of the easiest ways to make your event feel elevated is through layered design. Instead of everything perfectly matching, try to incorporate textured materials that feel collected and natural together.

This year, we’re loving these combinations:

  • Creams and warm whites
  • butter yellow and soft greens
  • natural textures and vintage wood

By mixing vintage furnishings with softer palettes, it creates a setting that feels timeless rather than overly trendy.

  1. Create Spaces That Guests Want to Gather In

A beautifully designed event should also feel comfortable. One mistake we often see is when clients put their focus on the dining tables only while overlooking the flow of the overall event space.

By adding in a vintage lounge, cocktail tables, or styled conversation areas, it instantly changes how guests interact during an event. These spaces encourage connection and create a more welcoming atmosphere, especially during cocktail hour or outdoor celebrations. Thoughtfully placed rental pieces can completely transform even the simplest space into an unforgettable experience.

  1. Focus on One or Two Statement Moments

Not every corner of an event needs to be overdesigned. In fact, some of the most elevated events focus on a few wow moments rather than excessive décor throughout.

We often recommend investing in:

  • a statement bar installation or rental
  • a curated lounge vignette for a photo moment

These focal points create visual impact while keeping the overall event feeling refined and intentional.

Think Beyond Weddings

One of the biggest trends we’re seeing this year is that clients are elevating smaller gatherings with professional design elements. Birthday dinners, communions, graduation parties, baby showers, and backyard celebrations are all becoming more thoughtfully styled. Rental pieces help create an experience that feels special without requiring a complete venue transformation.

At Dovetail Vintage Rentals, we believe great event design is about more than aesthetics. It’s about creating environments where people genuinely enjoy gathering together. The summer is the perfect season to embrace texture and intentional details that make any celebration feel unforgettable.
