When June arrives, parents start to exhale. The school year, with its homework battles, social pressures, and early alarms, is nearly over. YOU (and your children!) MADE IT. And so you think: if they survived this hectic school year, summer should be a CINCH.
It pains me to share what I’ve learned over nearly two decades of clinical practice: simply “getting through” things does not equate to mastery or progress. Summer, for kids who have been holding it together, is not the break we believe it to be. In fact, it can be a reckoning.
School is stressful, but it’s also incredibly stabilizing. It provides daily routines, peer contact, adult oversight, and a reason to get out of bed. For kids managing anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, SI/SH, or disordered eating, that scaffolding isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s load-bearing. When we remove it, all that was being held in place begins to surface.
Many kids white-knuckle their mental health to get through the school year, unwilling to disrupt academic and athletic commitments. By June, symptoms may appear to have resolved. But while situational stress lifts after its trigger does, true mental health conditions do not spontaneously remit without intervention. Summer becomes a litmus test.
The research is unambiguous. 1 in 5 teens ages 12–17 now carry a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition- a 35% increase since 2016. Anxiety alone has surged 61% among adolescents in this same period. In the absence of routine, expectations, and guaranteed social connection, teens with mental health conditions become more withdrawn: sleep deteriorates, eating patterns shift, and mood instability worsens.
None of this is a parenting failure. The impulse to give our kids downtime is loving. But rest, without daily structure, solidifies poor mental health habits and lowers the functional baseline families worked so hard to build during the school year.
At LiftWell Health, we created our founder-designed Prescription for Wellness® program specifically for the summer window. It’s an active, dynamic 2–6 week program, offered individually or in peer-group format, for children and teens ages 10–18. Rather than traditional talk therapy alone, Prescription for Wellness teaches foundational life skills: routine-building, behavior chaining, coping strategies, executive function, and social skills, all in a home-like setting on our Westport campus.
Kids receive individualized therapy alongside community integration, off-site field trip exposures to build real-world confidence, and parent and family support designed to carry progress back into the home. Because we view mental health systemically, we also provide nutritional therapy, culinary arts, kitchen skills, and all meals in our program- physical health is not separate from mental health; it’s a determining factor.
Our programs work with insurance and consistently generate meaningful, lasting results across all areas of wellness.
We know that treating mental health proactively is both more effective and less disruptive than treating in crisis. The skills your child builds this summer become the foundation they carry into September and beyond.
I recommend that parents utilize the summer to work on helping their teen build foundational skills for a successful adulthood: resilience, social skills, and wellbeing. This window before fall, when schedules are flexible and academic pressure is low, is the best opportunity for meaningful therapeutic progress. Reach out to LiftWell Health today to learn whether Prescription for Wellness® is the right fit for your family. Spots fill quickly each summer. Using a portion of the summer to get in front of your children’s mental health helps to provide the toolkit you need to make this summer, and next school year, more than simply survivable.
