After the joy of being featured with Rudy on the June cover of Lake Las Vegas Living, I thought it would be fun to share a July photo of the two of us walking through the village at Lake Las Vegas.

Summer walks with Rudy are one of my favorite ways to stay active, clear my mind, and enjoy this beautiful community we call home. But as temperatures rise, many women over 40 start to notice something else rising too: hot flashes, fatigue, bloating, poor sleep, irritability, and stubborn weight gain.

And the question becomes: is it just summer heat, or is something deeper going on?

For many women, midlife hormonal changes can make the body more sensitive to heat, stress, alcohol, sugar, poor sleep, and dehydration. Perimenopause and menopause can affect temperature regulation, metabolism, mood, energy, sleep, and weight.

That is why summer is the perfect time to pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you.

Midlife weight gain is not a character flaw. Many women tell me, “I am doing the same things I always did, but my body is not responding the same way.” That is real. Estrogen changes, insulin resistance, stress hormones, loss of muscle mass, poor sleep, and inflammation can all play a role.

The good news is that small daily habits can make a meaningful difference.

Start with hydration. In the Las Vegas heat, dehydration can worsen fatigue, headaches, cravings, constipation, and even hot flashes. Add electrolytes if you are sweating, exercising, or spending time outdoors.

Prioritize protein. Women over 40 need protein to support muscle, metabolism, blood sugar, and satiety. Aim to include protein with each meal instead of relying on coffee, snacks, or quick carbs to get through the day.

Move early. A morning walk, especially before the heat peaks, can support mood, metabolism, circulation, and mental clarity. Rudy makes sure I get mine in.

Strength train. Muscle is one of the most important tools we have for healthy aging. Even two to three days a week of resistance training can help support metabolism, balance, bones, and confidence.

Protect your sleep. Summer schedules, travel, wine, late dinners, and heat can all disrupt sleep. Poor sleep makes hot flashes, cravings, weight gain, and irritability worse.

For some women, additional support may be appropriate, including hormone therapy, targeted supplements, nutrition plans, or medications such as GLP-1s when clinically indicated. The key is personalization. What works for one woman may not be right for another.

This summer, instead of blaming your body, listen to it. Your symptoms are not “just aging,” and you do not have to push through feeling exhausted, overheated, foggy, or uncomfortable.

Life is not a dress rehearsal. The time to start living is NOW!

Your body deserves support, not shame. And you deserve to feel amazing in this season of life.
