Hearing loss can develop for many reasons, and understanding the cause is often the first step toward protecting long-term hearing health. While some forms occur naturally with age, others result from genetics, environmental noise exposure, or certain medications. Four of the most common causes of hearing loss are presbycusis, congenital hearing loss, sociocusis, and ototoxicity.
Presbycusis is the gradual hearing loss associated with aging. One of the most common forms of hearing loss in adults, it typically affects both ears equally. Individuals with presbycusis often notice difficulty hearing higher-pitched sounds or understanding speech clearly, especially in noisy environments. Conversations may begin to sound muffled, and following group discussions can become frustrating.
Because this type of hearing loss develops slowly, many people may not recognize the changes right away. Adults age 65 and older are nearly five times more likely to experience hearing loss than those younger than 65. Since hearing changes can begin long before they become obvious, many medical professionals recommend obtaining a baseline hearing test by age 50.
Congenital hearing loss refers to hearing loss present at birth. It may occur due to genetic factors, complications during pregnancy, premature birth, infections, or other conditions affecting development of the auditory system. Congenital hearing loss can range from mild to profound and may affect one or both ears.
Early detection is important because hearing plays a critical role in speech, language, learning, and social development. Many newborns now undergo hearing screenings shortly after birth, allowing intervention and treatment to begin early.
Sociocusis is hearing loss caused by long-term exposure to environmental noise. Unlike sudden loud blasts, sociocusis develops gradually after years of repeated exposure to moderate noise levels. Common contributors include traffic, lawn equipment, concerts, headphones, sporting events, recreational vehicles, and occupational noise exposure.
In communities where many individuals spend years in manufacturing, construction, farming, welding, or metal fabrication industries, sociocusis is especially common. Unfortunately, the damage often occurs slowly, making hearing changes difficult to recognize until communication problems become more noticeable later in life.
Ototoxicity occurs when certain medications or chemicals damage the inner ear. Some antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, high doses of aspirin, and prolonged exposure to industrial chemicals may negatively affect hearing or balance. Symptoms can include ringing in the ears, dizziness, balance problems, or sudden hearing changes.
Before beginning treatment with a potentially ototoxic medication, it is important to obtain a baseline audiogram so hearing levels can be monitored throughout treatment. Regular hearing evaluations allow providers to identify changes early and adjust amplification or treatment recommendations as needed.
