Flowers, Sunshine, and Hurricane Preparedness

As we move into July along Florida’s beautiful Space Coast, it’s hard not to appreciate everything that makes this time of year so special. Summer flowers are blooming, gardens are thriving, and our neighborhoods are filled with vibrant colors that remind us why so many people love calling Florida home.

This season brings longer days, warmer temperatures, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re tending flower beds, relaxing by the pool, or preparing for summer vacations, there’s a sense of excitement and renewal in the air.

As we tend to our summer gardens, now is also the time to prepare our homes and loved ones for the possibility of tropical weather during hurricane season. The good news is that hurricane preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little planning today can provide tremendous peace of mind later.

Consider taking a few simple steps:

  • Review your homeowners, renters, flood, and auto insurance policies to ensure coverages are current and adequate.
  • Create or update your hurricane supply kit with water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
  • Inspect your home for maintenance issues such as loose roof tiles, damaged fencing, or overgrown trees that could become hazards during high winds.
  • Verify that your contact information is current with your insurance company and keep policy information readily accessible.
  • Review your evacuation plans and ensure family members know what to do in the event of a storm.

One of the most common misconceptions we see is that hurricane preparation can wait until a storm is approaching. In reality, the best time to prepare is before a storm is on the radar. Once a named storm develops, insurance restrictions may limit the ability to purchase or modify certain coverages.

Think of preparedness like planting a garden. The effort invested early creates the best results when conditions change.

As we enjoy the beauty of blooming flowers, sunny skies, and everything that makes summer in Florida so wonderful, let’s also take a few moments to ensure our homes and families are protected. With thoughtful preparation, we can fully appreciate the season while feeling confident that we’re ready for whatever Mother Nature may bring.
