July in Eastern North Carolina brings heat, humidity, afternoon storms, cookouts, beach trips, and extra water usage. While homeowners are enjoying summer, plumbing systems are often working overtime. A little prevention now can help avoid a messy and expensive problem later.

One of the biggest summer plumbing issues is clogged drains. Cookouts and family gatherings often mean more grease, food scraps, and cleanup going down the kitchen sink. Even with a garbage disposal, some things should never go down the drain. Grease, pasta, rice, potato peels, corn husks, and fibrous vegetables can build up inside pipes and cause stubborn clogs. Scrape plates into the trash first and never pour grease into the sink. It may go down as a liquid, but it cools, hardens, and sticks to your pipes.

Heavy summer rain is another concern in Eastern North Carolina. When storms move through, older sewer lines and drainage systems can become overwhelmed. Slow drains, gurgling toilets, sewage odors, or water backing up into tubs or showers can be warning signs of a sewer line issue. These problems should be addressed quickly before they lead to water damage or unsanitary conditions.

Water heaters also deserve attention during the summer. With kids home from school, guests visiting, and extra laundry from beach towels and outdoor activities, your water heater may be used more than usual. Inconsistent hot water, rusty water, popping sounds, or moisture around the tank may mean it is time for an inspection.

Do not forget outdoor plumbing. Hose bibs, irrigation systems, and outdoor showers can leak without being noticed. Watch for dripping faucets, soggy areas, unusually green patches of grass, or a sudden increase in your water bill.

Plumbing problems rarely fix themselves. They usually get louder, wetter, and more expensive.

When something does not seem right, call Plumbs Up Plumbing. A quick inspection today can help save your summer tomorrow.
