At Denver Eye Care & Eyewear Gallery, we’ve always believed that exceptional eye care goes beyond simply helping patients see clearly. Our goal is to help our community preserve healthy vision for life through prevention, education, and the latest advancements in healthcare technology.
That’s why I’m excited to share one of the newest investments we’ve made in 2026: the LifeMeter® by MacuHealth.
Most people are familiar with measuring blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar as indicators of overall health. But very few realize there is now a simple, painless way to measure carotenoid levels—important antioxidants that support the health of your eyes, brain, heart, and entire body. The LifeMeter uses advanced reflection spectroscopy technology to assess carotenoid concentrations through your fingertip in less than three minutes. No needles, no blood draw, and no discomfort.
Why does this matter?
Carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin, are naturally found in colorful fruits and vegetables and accumulate in the retina, particularly in the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, detailed vision. These powerful antioxidants help protect tissues throughout the body from oxidative stress and inflammation, two processes linked to aging and many chronic diseases.
Research has shown that higher carotenoid levels are associated not only with better visual performance and macular health, but also with improved cognitive function and overall wellness. Conversely, lower carotenoid levels have been associated with increased risk factors for age-related conditions such as macular degeneration, cognitive decline, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer. While carotenoid levels alone do not diagnose or predict disease, they can serve as an important marker of nutritional status and the body’s ability to defend itself against oxidative damage.
Unfortunately, many Americans do not consume enough carotenoid-rich foods on a daily basis. The challenge is that you can’t feel when your carotenoid levels are low. There are often no symptoms until health concerns develop years later. That’s why we believe in taking a proactive rather than reactive approach to healthcare.
The LifeMeter gives us an objective snapshot of your nutritional status today so we can have meaningful conversations about what steps may help protect your future health. Sometimes that means increasing leafy green vegetables and colorful fruits in your diet. Other times, we may recommend evidence-based nutritional supplementation designed to support healthy carotenoid levels. The exciting part is that these changes can often be tracked over time with repeat testing, allowing patients to see measurable improvements in their scores.
As an optometrist, I am passionate about helping patients preserve vision before disease develops. While we continue to utilize advanced imaging technology to detect eye disease early, the LifeMeter allows us to take prevention a step further by evaluating a biomarker that has implications far beyond the eyes. It provides valuable insight into nutritional health that may influence not only vision, but also long-term brain and systemic health.
I’m proud to share that Denver Eye Care & Eyewear Gallery offers LifeMeter testing complimentary to our patients. It’s one more way we’re investing in the health of the Lake Norman community and helping our patients make informed decisions about their wellness long before problems arise.
Because the future of healthcare isn’t simply treating disease—it’s identifying risk early, optimizing health, and empowering people to live better, longer lives.
