The Right Home for Your Next Chapter May Not Be the One You’re In

Most of us picked our homes for a version of life we were living at the time. Over the years, lives and routines naturally progress, but the time to redesign the home, or find one that fits your lifestyle better, needs to be intentional.

Nothing made that clearer than the pandemic. Almost overnight, homes had to become offices, classrooms, and everything in between. A dining room turned into a workspace. A kitchen table doubled as a desk for a kid attending school on a laptop. Families spent more waking hours inside their homes than most had in years, and it forced an intentional redesign of the layout, or a makeshift solution.

That period feels distant now, but the underlying question hasn’t gone away. Kids who once needed a study are graduating. A home office set up in 2021 might only get used a few days a week now, as you’re back in the office or exploring new projects in retirement. Parents who downsized their own routines are still living in homes built for a busier household. These changes develop one busy season at a time, which is why they’re easy to miss until the small obstacles start to add up.

I’d encourage you to sit with a few questions about your own home. How do you actually use each room, compared to how you imagined it? Is there a part of your day that feels harder than it should because of the space or location you’re in? If nothing about your home or neighborhood changed, would it still fit your life in five years?

One question we encourage homeowners to ask is “Does this home support the way I live anymore?” instead of “Do I need a bigger house?”.

The answer doesn’t always mean moving. In many cases, rearranging furniture, repurposing a room, or making a thoughtful renovation can make your home feel new again. Other times, the daily frustrations continue because the size or layout itself no longer supports your needs. The important thing is giving yourself the opportunity to notice the difference.

August is a natural time to reflect as summer winds down and families prepare for new routines. Many homeowners get a clearer picture of what is working and what isn’t, while they still have a chance to look ahead before their calendars fill up again.

If you find yourself constantly adapting your routine to fit your home and are thinking it might be time to make a move, let’s start the conversation now. That conversation begins by understanding your goals and creating a plan that fits your timeline.
