As I reflect on being a dance teacher for over 20 years now and owning my own business for 10 years, I am thinking about the benefits of dance versus all the other activities you can choose for your dancer. Every child deserves an activity that helps them grow—not just physically, but emotionally, socially, and creatively. There are many wonderful sports and extracurricular activities available to families, but dance offers a unique combination of benefits that lasts far beyond childhood.
Dance is one of the few activities that develops both the body and the mind at the same time. Students build strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and endurance while also improving memory, focus, musicality, and problem-solving skills. Learning choreography teaches discipline and perseverance, while performing on stage builds confidence that carries into school, future careers, and everyday life.
Dance also teaches valuable life lessons. Students learn commitment by attending class each week, responsibility by practicing their skills, teamwork by encouraging their classmates, and resilience by understanding that improvement comes through patience and effort. These are qualities that benefit children long after they outgrow their dance shoes. In dance, children learn that every challenge is an opportunity, every mistake is a lesson, and every performance is a celebration of hard work. They discover that dedication creates confidence, teamwork builds friendships, and expressing themselves through movement is a gift they’ll carry for the rest of their lives.
While trophies, medals, and performances can be exciting, the true reward of dance isn’t found in awards. It’s found in the confidence a child gains after mastering a difficult skill, the smile after a successful performance, the friendships built in every class, and the pride that comes from working hard toward a goal. Sports often focus on winning. Other arts often focus on creating. Dance teaches children to pursue excellence while appreciating the journey of growth. Success isn’t measured only by trophies or applause but by becoming stronger, more confident, more resilient, and more compassionate. When you choose dance, you’re choosing much more than a class. You’re choosing confidence, character, creativity, community, and a lifelong love of movement.
Every activity has something valuable to offer, but dance is truly one of a kind. It combines athleticism with artistry, discipline with creativity, and individual growth with teamwork. Whether a child dreams of performing on stage or simply wants to have fun while staying active, dance provides skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
