Beginning January 1, 2027, Medicare Supplement policyholders in Farmington and throughout New Mexico will have a new opportunity to review and change their coverage each year.
Under New Mexico’s new Medicare Supplement “birthday rule,” eligible policyholders age 65 and older will receive an annual enrollment period beginning on the first day of their birthday month and continuing for at least 60 days. During this window, they may switch to an available Medicare Supplement or Medigap policy with equal or lesser benefits without medical underwriting.
For example, someone enrolled in Plan G may be able to move to another company’s Plan G if it offers a better rate. The new insurer cannot deny the application, impose a new waiting period, or charge more because of the applicant’s health.
Why This Matters in Farmington
Many Farmington-area retirees live on a carefully planned combination of Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts and personal savings. When Medicare Supplement premiums increase, those added expenses can gradually reduce the income available for utilities, groceries, travel and family.
Until now, people who wanted to change Medigap policies outside their initial enrollment period could be required to answer health questions. A medical condition might result in a higher premium or even prevent them from qualifying for a different policy.
The birthday rule gives eligible residents of Farmington and San Juan County an annual opportunity to compare premiums without their health history standing in the way. This could be particularly helpful for longtime policyholders who have experienced repeated rate increases.
Medicare Is Part of Your Retirement Plan
Healthcare coverage should be reviewed as part of your overall retirement and wealth strategy. Lowering unnecessary insurance expenses may help preserve retirement savings, strengthen emergency reserves and provide more flexibility for other financial goals.
However, price should not be the only consideration. Before changing policies, compare the benefits, premiums, rate history, household discounts and financial strength of each insurance company. Never cancel an existing policy until the replacement coverage has been approved and confirmed.
At Groves Financial Group, we believe Medicare and retirement planning should work together. As 2027 approaches, Farmington-area Medigap policyholders should mark their calendars and prepare to review their coverage during their new birthday enrollment window.
