The Art of Looking Well-Rested, Even When You Are Absolutely Not

Hi, I’m Cherise, a busy mom of two girls, splitting my time between makeup clients, my studio in Quogue, and behind the scenes growing my hair and makeup agency.

As the summer parties and beach days come to an end, you may be feeling like your skin needs a tall glass of water and a makeup routine edit. I’m not here to bring you the latest Tik-Tok trends, but as a seasoned makeup artist, I’m here to give you the simple, realistic tips to go from feeling puffy and dehydrated, to looking well-rested and glowing.

Skin first, makeup second. Piling on makeup won’t fix tired skin, but starting with good skin prep will. I swear by the Skinny Confidential Ice Roller to melt away puffiness, followed by a hydrating eye cream like the dreamy Kiehl’s creamy avocado cream. We all know to apply a moisturizer (that suits your skin type — I’m loving Dieux Skin), but it’s how you apply your moisturizer that matters as much as what you use. If you can, take the extra 30 seconds to apply it with intention. Massage upward along your jawline and outward across your cheeks, then work upward through the “11 lines” between your brows, and gently lift your brows a few times. Gravity will continue to fight us, and this won’t replace a facial at SFA, but I promise if you add a little extra love on the areas where your face needs it the most, you’ll not only see the difference, but feel the difference. And feeling good is half the win here.

When it comes to natural looking makeup, it’s all about light application and placement. With concealer, less product in the right place looks fresher than covering the entire under eye area. Apply a dash in the inner corner of your undereye, and an upward dash on the outer corner to lift the eye. If you find yourself looking worse than you started, and the product is just setting into those lines more than you like, take a q-tip and gently dab those areas where your fine lines are.  Sometimes just using a peachy toned color corrector and lightly dabbing it onto the discolored areas with your finger, does the trick.

Once your face is de-puffed, moisturized well, and darkness is diminished, you’re already on your way to looking well-rested. For a little extra boost, focus on a clean lifted brow, a wash of bronzer or cream blush, light mascara and lastly, but certainly one of the most important steps….a hydrated pout. For the love of looking put together, make sure you do not walk out with dry, chapped lips. My go to is the Summer Fridays Butter Lip Balm.

It’s not about a statement eye, or contoured cheeks for an everyday well-rested look, it’s the “wow, you look great” moment.

As we head into September, give yourself the version of “well-rested” that’s really just you, with a little extra care.
