You know something has to change.
Maybe every conversation becomes the same argument. Perhaps you live together but feel alone. An affair, trauma, or painful rupture may have changed how you see each other. Or one of you may be fighting for the marriage while the other wonders whether it is already over.
As a marriage and family therapist—and as a wife and member of a blended family—I understand that relationships are rarely simple. The right kind of couples therapy depends on what is keeping your marriage stuck.
When You’re Unsure About the Marriage
Discernment counseling is for couples who disagree about whether to remain married. One spouse is “leaning in,” hoping to repair the relationship, while the other is “leaning out” and considering separation or divorce.
Traditional couples counseling can stall when the couple has not agreed on its goal. Discernment counseling begins with a different question: Are we both willing to work on this marriage?
This short-term process helps couples consider three paths: continuing as they are, moving toward separation, or committing to couples therapy. The goal is not reconciliation at any cost. It is greater clarity about what comes next.
When You Need Better Tools
Traditional marriage counseling may help when both partners want to stay together but need practical tools for communication, parenting, money, intimacy, household responsibilities, or family boundaries.
Couples can learn to listen, express their needs, solve problems, and disagree without causing more damage. But communication skills are not always enough. Many people know what healthy communication should look like until conflict begins and their nervous systems sound the alarm.
When You Keep Having the Same Fight
Emotionally Focused Therapy, commonly called EFT, looks beneath recurring conflicts to identify the attachment fears and emotional needs driving them.
You may appear to be arguing about dishes, text messages, intimacy, or work. Underneath, you may be asking: Do I matter to you? Can I depend on you? Will you be there when I need you?
Many couples become trapped in a pursue-withdraw cycle. One partner reaches for reassurance through questions, criticism, or escalating emotion. The other becomes overwhelmed and retreats. EFT helps couples see this cycle as the shared problem and rebuild emotional safety, trust, and connection.
When the Past Keeps Entering the Present
Sometimes you understand the pattern but still cannot stop it. A delayed text feels like abandonment. A disagreement feels dangerous. Your mind knows your spouse is not the person who hurt you, but your body reacts as though the past is happening again.
EMDR therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach to trauma treatment. In couples work, EMDR may help when childhood wounds, betrayal, loss, previous relationships, or other painful experiences repeatedly affect the marriage.
My belief in EMDR is both professional and personal. After experiencing trauma in adulthood, I went through my own healing journey with EMDR. It changed the direction of my life and led me back to graduate school. Trauma may become part of your story, but it does not have to determine how the rest of that story is written.
