Get Your Roof Ready for Fall: Simple Maintenance That Prevents Big Problems

As summer winds down and the leaves start to turn, it’s easy to focus on cooler weather and cozy evenings—but fall is also the most important time of year to give your roof some attention. A little maintenance now can save homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs once winter storms and snow loads arrive. Here are the essential items every homeowner should check off their list before the season changes.

  1. Clean Your Gutters First

If you do nothing else this fall, clean your gutters. This is, without question, the single most important maintenance task you can perform before winter. As leaves and debris fall, they collect in gutters and downspouts, creating clogs that trap water against your roofline. That trapped water has nowhere to go, so it backs up under shingles, seeps into fascia boards, and can even find its way into your attic or walls.

Left unaddressed, clogged gutters are a leading cause of ice dams in colder months. When melting snow refreezes at a blocked gutter line, it forces water backward under the roofing material, leading to leaks, rot, and interior damage that’s far more expensive to fix than a simple cleaning. We recommend cleaning gutters at least twice in the fall—once after the first major leaf drop and again once trees are bare—and checking that downspouts direct water at least three to five feet away from your foundation.

  1. Inspect Shingles for Damage

Walk your property and look up at your roof from several angles, or use binoculars for a closer view. Watch for shingles that are curling, cracked, or missing granules, as well as any that look loose or lifted. Summer heat and UV exposure take a toll on roofing materials, and small issues left unaddressed can turn into leaks once fall rain and winter snow arrive.

  1. Trim Overhanging Branches

Branches that hang over your roof can scrape shingles, drop debris into gutters, and provide easy access for squirrels and other pests looking for a way into your attic. Trimming trees back before fall storms also reduces the risk of a heavy limb coming down during high winds.

  1. Check Flashing and Sealant

Flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is one of the most common places roofs develop leaks. Inspect these areas for cracked or peeling sealant and loose metal flashing. If anything looks worn, it’s worth having a professional take a closer look before winter weather makes repairs more difficult.

  1. Look at Attic Ventilation and Insulation

Proper attic ventilation helps regulate temperature and moisture, which prevents ice dams and extends the life of your roof. Make sure vents are clear of debris and insulation is evenly distributed, especially in older homes.

  1. When in Doubt, Call a Professional

Fall maintenance is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. Gutter cleaning alone prevents the majority of water-related roof damage we see every winter. If you notice signs of wear, or if it’s simply been a few years since your last inspection, now is the time to schedule one—before the weather turns and repairs become urgent.
