You Insured the House. But Did You Insure Your Lifestyle?

Living beachside in Florida is about much more than the home itself. It’s the golf cart in the garage, the boat at the dock, the bikes along the side of the house, the jewelry tucked away for special occasions, and the backyard where friends and family gather around the pool.

We spend a lot of time thinking about insuring our homes and vehicles, but some of the things that make up our everyday lifestyle can create coverage gaps we never considered.

A good place to start is with the belongings inside your home. Most homeowners policies provide personal property coverage, but certain categories of valuables may have special limits. Jewelry, watches, fine art, collectibles, firearms and other higher-value items may need to be specifically scheduled or separately insured to receive the protection you expect.

Then there are the toys that come with the Florida lifestyle.

Golf carts are increasingly common in our beachside communities, but they aren’t automatically treated like another vehicle in every situation. Boats, personal watercraft, motorcycles and recreational vehicles all bring their own insurance considerations as well. Even something as simple as adding an e-bike or expensive bicycle to the household is worth discussing with your insurance professional.

Your backyard deserves some attention, too.

Pools, spas, trampolines, docks and frequent entertaining can increase your liability exposure. If someone is seriously injured on your property—or if you or a family member causes a significant accident—your homeowners or auto liability limits may not be enough to fully protect the assets you have worked hard to build.

That is where a personal umbrella policy can become especially valuable. Umbrella insurance provides an additional layer of liability protection above certain underlying policies and is one of the most overlooked parts of a well-designed personal insurance program.

Lifestyle changes matter as well. Renovating the kitchen, adding a pool, installing solar panels, purchasing expensive jewelry, buying a boat, welcoming a teenage driver or acquiring a second property are all great reasons to review your insurance.

Insurance works best when it evolves along with your life.

Once a year, take a few minutes to look beyond the declarations page and ask yourself a simple question: If something happened tomorrow, would my insurance protect not only my house and car, but the lifestyle and assets I’ve built around them?

A thoughtful conversation with your insurance professional can uncover gaps before they become expensive surprises.

Because protecting your home is important—but protecting the life you’ve built inside and around it is even better.
