Getting Ready for Hunting Season

As hunting season approaches, this is the time of year when many hunters start looking over their equipment and realizing that something needs a little attention. Maybe your bow isn’t shooting quite right, your treestand needs some adjustments, or you’re trying to decide what equipment you really need for the season.

That’s where we can help.

Archery

At Redding’s, we have a full archery service center and are a TenPoint Authorized Service Center. We work on both compound bows and crossbows, including bow tuning, strings and cables, and helping customers choose the right arrows and broadheads.

When it comes to archery, there is no one-size-fits-all setup. Draw length, draw weight, bow length and weight all play a part in finding the right bow for the individual hunter. Once the bow is chosen, getting it properly set up to fit the shooter is just as important.

We carry Bowtech and Diamond compound bows, as well as TenPoint, Wicked Ridge, Killer Instinct and Excalibur crossbows.

We also have an archery shooting lane in the store. Customers can use it to practice, get comfortable with new equipment, or work through an issue with their setup before heading into the woods.

When you purchase a new bow from us, we don’t believe in rushing you through the process. We take the time to get everything set up properly and let you shoot it so we can make sure it fits you and feels right. It’s about getting you the right equipment—not simply getting you to the cash register.

Muzzleloader

With early muzzleloader season getting ready to start, it’s also a good time to take a look at black powder equipment.

We carry both flintlock and inline muzzleloaders, along with the supplies and accessories needed to get started, including powder, bullets and optics.

We’ve seen a significant increase in black powder sales over the last five years. More hunters are taking advantage of the warmer early-season weather and the opportunity to spend time in the woods.

If you’ve ever considered trying muzzleloader hunting but aren’t sure where to begin, stop in and talk with us. We can go over the different equipment options and help you figure out what makes sense for you and your budget.

Small Game

Small game season may not get the attention it once did, but we still see plenty of interest here in Pennsylvania.

Rabbits, squirrels and pheasants continue to bring hunters into the woods. While we may not have the resident pheasant population we once did, stocked birds on public ground give hunters another opportunity to enjoy this tradition. Whether you’re running a dog or taking the kids out for a walk and hoping to kick up a bird, small game hunting is still a great way to spend time outdoors.

The right equipment can make a difference. Hunting rabbits and pheasants may require different ammunition than what you would normally use for other types of hunting. Redding’s carries a wide variety of shotgun ammunition to help hunters find the right load for what they’re pursuing.

Buying the Right Equipment

One of the hardest parts of getting ready for hunting season is sorting through all the equipment and deciding what you actually need.

The outdoor industry is full of new products and marketing that can make you feel like you need the newest and most expensive gear to be successful. But does the latest product really make you a better hunter?

There are two ways to find out: buy it and see for yourself, or ask someone you trust who will give you an honest opinion.

We believe experience matters. An honest recommendation should come from someone who has used the equipment, understands it, or has talked to people who have. Brand names and advertising shouldn’t be the only things that determine what you buy.

That’s especially true with archery equipment. A bow that works great for one person may not be the right bow for someone else. Proper fit and setup can make a huge difference in how well you shoot and, just as importantly, how much you enjoy shooting.

At Redding’s, we take pride in helping customers find equipment that works for them. Whether you’re an experienced hunter or someone just getting started, our goal is to help you make an informed decision and get the most out of the equipment you have.

We’ll save rifles, shotguns, handguns, optics and other firearm equipment for our next issue, when we’ll take a closer look at getting ready for rifle season—and what you can do to get that old trusty rifle ready for the woods.
