The Lake Is Closing. What About Everything Else?

  • Copied!

You live here because you love the lake. There’s something special about fall season around the water. The summer boats are coming out, docks are being pulled, RVs are being winterized, and the pace begins to slow. As we put away summer, it’s also a good time to think about everything else that needs attention before winter arrives.

Your Fall Insurance Checklist

  • Winterize the boat  Before your boat goes into storage, make sure you understand how your boat, trailer, equipment and personal property are covered during the off-season. Storage locations and circumstances can matter when it comes to coverage.
  • Close up the lake house  A seasonal or secondary home may have different considerations than your primary residence. Before you lock the door for the season, think about the home itself, outbuildings, personal property and liability protection.
  • Get the RV ready for storage  Whether your RV is parked at home or headed to a storage facility, fall is a good time to make sure your coverage still fits how and where you’re using it.
  • Put away the recreational toys  ATVs, golf carts, trailers and other recreational equipment are a big part of enjoying life around the lake. As the seasons change, so can the way you use and store them.
  • Prepare your home for winter  Leaves, freezing temperatures, ice and snow can bring their own set of challenges. Cleaning gutters, checking your roof, protecting pipes and taking care of trees and branches can help prevent problems before winter sets in.
  • Take a look at your vehicles  Fall is also a good reminder to think about the vehicles that get you through every season. Changes in drivers, vehicles, mileage or how a vehicle is being used can all be reasons to revisit your coverage.
  • Think beyond the things you can see  Sometimes the biggest risks aren’t the things sitting in your driveway or on your dock. An umbrella policy can provide an additional layer of liability protection over certain underlying policies—worth considering if your assets, activities or exposure have changed.
  • Don’t forget your business  If you own a business, fall can be a great time to consider changes that have occurred throughout the year. New equipment, vehicles, employees, locations or services may all be worth reviewing.

A Change of Season Is a Good Time to Check In

You don’t have to wait for a renewal notice or a problem to think about insurance. October provides a natural opportunity to take stock of what you have, how you’re using it and whether your coverage still makes sense. After all, the lake may be closing for the season, but life around it doesn’t stop.
