After helping our neighbors through countless accidents over the years, I’ve seen how overwhelming those first few minutes can be. I put together this simple checklist to help you know what to do, document the accident, and protect yourself when the unexpected happens.
1. Check for injuries & call 911
Check everyone involved. Call 911 for injuries or significant damage.
2. Safety first
Turn on your hazard lights and stay off of the roadway.
3. Stick to neutral facts
Stay calm and stick to neutral facts. Avoid apologizing or making statements about who caused the accident.
4. Photograph the vehicles
Take photos of every vehicle from multiple angles, including close-ups of all damage and license plates.
5. Document the scene
Photograph road conditions, traffic signs/signals, skid marks, debris, and any visible injuries. Take a short video of the surrounding scene if possible.
6. Photograph the other driver’s documents
With permission, photograph the other driver’s license and insurance card.
7. Exchange driver information
Get each driver’s name, phone number, driver’s license number, license plate, vehicle details, insurance company, and policy number.
8. Get witness information
Record the names and phone numbers of passengers and independent witnesses before they leave.
9. Get the police report number
Ask the responding officer for the report/incident number, name and badge number, and instructions for obtaining the report.
10. Preserve everything
Keep your photos, videos, documents, witness information, and medical records together. Don’t delete or alter anything related to the accident.
We hope you never need this checklist, but it’s always better to be prepared. If you or a family member is ever involved in an accident, take a breath, put safety first, and take things one step at a time.
