A Natural Approach to Headache and Migraine Relief
Headaches and migraines affect millions of people worldwide, causing discomfort and pain that often interferes with work, school, and social activities. Whether it’s a migraine, where you have to find a dark corner in a quiet room, or just another dull headache that nags at you day in and day out, both can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. We always hear, “It’s just a normal headache (or migraine)”, but they are far from it! Both are signs of dysfunction in the body. Most people think that they are just stuck with medication, but there are several lifestyle modifications and natural remedies out there that might just be the answer for you.
Increase your water intake
Chronic dehydration is a larger issue than people realize. We hear it all the time in our practice, but just because coffee and soda have water in it, does NOT mean that it is hydrating. Taking a small pinch (just a few granules) of mineral salt before your water can help with hydration. The minerals (and the sodium) help to move the water into the cells for a better hydration. This replenishes the natural minerals that are supposed to be in our water but get filtered out. Being properly hydrated helps increase blood volume and flow, balances electrolytes, and helps lymphatic flow (your trash removal system).
Supplementation
Roughly 45-50% of people have a magnesium deficiency, which can play a major role in headaches and migraines. The standard foods now contain less nutrients than they did years ago due to the mineral depletion in the soil. PLUS, caffeine and a lot of different medications can further deplete you of it. Our office recommends a supplement specifically formulated for headaches and migraines called OptiMag Neuro by Xymogen, which is a blend of magnesium malate, L-threonate, and glycinate. This supplement helps to calm you and your muscles and gets the proper nutrients to your brain.
Reduce Stress
Stress can be a big trigger of migraines and headaches. Even a busy schedule can cause an overload. Stress can also be a key factor in hormonal headaches by causing fluctuations in cortisol levels. Frequent exercise (3+ days per week), meditation, breathing exercises, reducing screen time, massage, and even spending time doing something you enjoy are some of my favorite ways to reduce stress.
Balance Your Blood Sugar
A drop in your blood sugar can trigger a headache or migraine. If you think your headache/migraine might be stemming from this, eat a spoonful of honey. Honey will help to get you that quick rise in your blood sugar that is needed until you can get a meal or healthier snack. Balancing out your meals is one of the best ways of prevention. Per our registered dietitian, Katie Potts, ideally you will want your meals to consist of 30-40 grams of protein, 20-30 grams of fat, with fruits and or vegetables. She recommends avoiding starches and processed foods for a while.
Caffeine Intake
The daily recommended caffeine intake from the FDA is under 400 milligrams per day. Katie further recommends reducing intake to less than 300 milligrams per day. In addition to depletion of vital nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins, caffeine can contribute constriction of the blood vessels
Massage
Muscular adhesions, scar tissues, and tight muscles can also lead to headaches/migraines. Regular massages can help reduce any muscle strain that could be contributing.
Chiropractic Care
This alternative therapy has gained popularity in recent years and has shown to provide relief for migraine sufferers. The link between manipulation and headache/migraine relief lies in the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. The spine plays a crucial role in the body’s overall function, as it houses the spinal cord, which is responsible for transmitting messages between the brain and the rest of the body. When the spine is misaligned, it can put pressure on the nerves, leading to various health issues, including migraines.
Chiropractic adjustments aim to realign the spine and alleviate pressure on the nerves. By restoring proper alignment, chiropractors can help improve the function of the nervous system, reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. Additionally, adjustments can also help improve blood flow to the brain, which is essential for migraine prevention.
Several studies have explored the effectiveness of chiropractic care for migraine relief, with promising results. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments were more effective than medication in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. Another study published in the European Journal of Neurology in 2016 concluded that chiropractic care was a safe and effective treatment option for migraine sufferers.
While medication can provide temporary relief from headaches/migraines, it often fails to address the underlying causes of either condition. Chiropractic care focuses on improving overall health and wellness, rather than just treating symptoms. By addressing the underlying issues that contribute to headaches/migraines, such as spinal misalignments, poor posture, or muscle tension, chiropractors can help patients achieve long-term relief and prevent future episodes. This holistic approach to care can lead to improved quality of life and reduced reliance on medication.
Moreover, regular chiropractic adjustments can help improve overall spinal health, which is essential for preventing a wide range of health issues. By maintaining proper alignment and function of the spine, patients can experience better overall health and well-being. The power of chiropractic in relieving headaches/migraines through adjustments is a promising alternative therapy for those seeking natural and effective relief.
