In August, I had an amazing opportunity to explore Alaska by land. Our adventure began in Anchorage.
Anchorage welcomed us with crisp air, snow-dusted mountains, and a surprisingly vibrant downtown scene. Before embarking on our road trip north, we spent time exploring the city’s highlights:
Downtown Anchorage offers a mix of local boutiques, Alaskan Native art galleries, and souvenir shops filled with hand-carved treasures, ulu knives, and smoked salmon.
A stroll along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail delivered panoramic views of Cook Inlet and, if you’re lucky, the occasional moose.
The Anchorage Museum provided the perfect introduction to Alaskan history and culture, giving context to the landscapes we were about to explore.
Anchorage served not just as a starting point, but as a thriving hub that showcased Alaska’s unique blend of urban and wild.
The Road to Talkeetna
Leaving Anchorage behind, we set out on the scenic drive toward Talkeetna—a quirky, artsy village with frontier charm and postcard views of Denali. The roadside scenery alone was worth the trip: rolling forests, alpine lakes, and the majestic mountain range peeking through the clouds.
Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge: A View Worth the Journey
Our stay at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge exceeded every expectation. Perched on a bluff overlooking Denali and the Alaska Range, the lodge offered unmatched views right from its expansive deck. We spent the evening by the stone hearth fireplace, sipping local brews and soaking in the mountain magic.
Exploring Talkeetna
Talkeetna itself is a must-see. Its Main Street is lined with rustic shops, local art studios, and cafés that feel straight out of a storybook. We wandered through storefronts selling handmade crafts, fresh-baked goods, and even flightseeing tour tickets.
The Alaskan Railroad: A Journey Through the Wilderness
One of the highlights of the trip was hopping aboard the Alaska Railroad for a segment of the journey. The glass-domed railcars offered panoramic views of untouched wilderness— rushing rivers, dense forests, and the towering peaks of the Alaska Range.
Friendly guides shared stories of the region’s history, wildlife, and indigenous culture. It was slow travel in the best possible way—immersive, peaceful, and absolutely unforgettable.
Denali: Where Adventure Meets Awe
Nothing prepares you for Denali. The closer you get, the more the world seems to expand— bigger peaks, wider valleys, deeper colors. Our stay at the Holland America Denali Lodge was both cozy and convenient, offering easy access to trails, shops, restaurants, and the Denali National Park visitor center.
Glacier Landing: The Adventure of a Lifetime
The crown jewel of the trip? A glacier landing on Denali itself.
We boarded a small bush plane in Talkeetna, flew over vast rivers of ice, and touched down on a pristine glacier surrounded by towering peaks. The silence was surreal. Standing in the heart of Alaska’s tallest mountain made the world feel both enormous and incredibly still.
Exploring Denali National Park
Beyond the glacier landing, Denali offered endless opportunities for exploration:
Wildlife viewing for caribou, Dall sheep, and maybe even a wandering grizzly • Short hikes to alpine overlooks
Shopping for local crafts and outdoor gear in the nearby village
Every moment felt like stepping deeper into the wild.

From the bustling streets of Anchorage to the mountain vistas of Talkeetna and the untamed beauty of Denali, this land trip captured everything I love about travel: awe, adventure, and the spirit of discovery.
