Ask the Expert: Is Winter a Good Time to Trim or Remove a Tree?
When most people think about tree work, they picture spring clean-ups or summer pruning. But believe it or not, winter is actually the best time to trim or remove a tree. The colder months offer unique advantages that protect your trees, save you money, and support long-term health in your yard.
Why Winter Pruning Is Ideal
In winter, trees enter a natural dormant state. With the leaves gone, your arborist has a clear, unobstructed view of the tree’s structure—making it much easier to spot concerns and complete a proper Tree Risk Assessment. Fewer leaves also mean less time on the jobsite, which translates into cost savings for homeowners.
Winter pruning is also recommended because many tree species should not be pruned between March and October. This “no-prune” list is extensive, but some common varieties include oaks, elms, birch, beech, and Japanese maples. For most of these species, disease prevention is the primary reason. Japanese maples, for example, are exceptionally delicate and sensitive to changes in temperature and atmosphere.
Protecting Against Devastating Diseases
The mighty oak, one of the most beloved and recognizable trees in our region, is unfortunately vulnerable to two very serious diseases: Sudden Oak Death (SOD) and Oak Wilt. Both can spread quickly, and timing of pruning is critical to preventing infection. If you have concerns about the health of your oak trees, winter is the safest season to schedule an assessment.
Insects Don’t Take Over in Winter
Another major advantage of winter work is the reduction of insect activity. Insects are among the biggest contributors to tree decline as hey spread disease, cause defoliation, and accelerate rot. A well-known example is the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), which tragically devastated ash tree populations across Southwestern Ontario.
Today, pests like the Gypsy Moth and tent caterpillar continue to threaten our urban forests, including right here in Kingsville. Performing pruning during the dormant, insect-free months reduces risk and helps keep our community’s canopy strong and healthy.
