Building Bright Smiles From the Very Beginning
As many of our neighbors know, our family recently welcomed a new baby; a joyful reminder of just how quickly little ones grow and how early their health habits begin. With that in mind, we thought this would be the perfect time to highlight a few important pediatric dental milestones for infants, babies, and toddlers.
The First Dental Visit: Earlier Than You Think
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing. This early visit is quick, gentle, and focused on prevention. It allows us to ensure your baby’s mouth is developing normally, discuss feeding and habits, and answer any questions you may have.
Caring for Baby Teeth Before They Even Appear
A healthy smile truly begins before the first tooth erupts. We encourage parents to gently wipe their baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth once or twice a day. When that first tooth does arrive, switch to a small, soft-bristled toothbrush. You can use training toothpaste or a bristle or two of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) since they cannot spit. Establishing a routine early helps children view brushing as a normal, comfortable part of daily life.
Bottle, Breastfeeding & Nighttime Tips
Prolonged exposure to breast milk or formula during sleep can increase the risk of early cavities. If your baby falls asleep during feeding, try wiping the gums before putting them down. As your child grows, transitioning away from bottles at bedtime and introducing an open cup around age one can also protect those new teeth.
Teething & What’s Normal
Teething can begin as early as 4–6 months. Mild fussiness, drooling, and chewing are common. Cold teething rings or a gentle gum massage can help soothe discomfort. If you ever notice a fever, rash, or symptoms that seem unusual, your pediatrician is the best place to check in.
Partnering With Parents From Day One
As both a dental professional and new parents again ourselves, we know how many questions arise in the early years. It’s a great idea to establish a relationship with your pediatric dentist so that you can reach out when you have questions. Our goal is to support families through every stage; whether your child is waiting on their first tooth or proudly flashing all twenty. We’re honored to be part of this community and look forward to helping your little ones grow up with healthy, confident smiles.
