Duradek is known for its durability, waterproofing reliability and low-maintenance performance, but like any outdoor surface, it benefits from a bit of seasonal attention. Snow, ice and fluctuating temperatures can place stress on outdoor living spaces, and giving your Duradek deck proper care ensures it looks great and performs exceptionally year after year. Fortunately, winter maintenance is simple and doesn’t require special products or harsh treatments. By following a few practical guidelines, homeowners can protect their investment while ensuring their deck remains safe, functional and attractive throughout the cold season.

Snow Removal

Fortunately in our area, heavy snowfall accumulations are relatively rare. However, if you choose to clear the occasional snowfall from your deck, it’s best done promptly before the snow has a chance to freeze up and turn to ice. A plastic shovel is the best tool for this as it will not damage the Duradek vinyl. Be sure to avoid metal tools or pounding to crack any ice. Duradek is designed to withstand winter weather, but preventing heavy snow accumulation helps minimize unnecessary weight and keeps the surface usable. Use a soft-edged snow shovel or a plastic snow pusher—never metal tools, which can damage the vinyl membrane. Push snow off the edge of the deck rather than scraping aggressively. For high-use areas such as stairs, walkways, or access points, keeping the surface clear also reduces the risk of slip-and-fall accidents.

Managing Ice Safely

Ice is a common winter challenge, and homeowners often wonder what de-icing products are safe to use. The good news is that Duradek can tolerate most common, non-abrasive ice melters, including rock salt, without damage to the vinyl surface. However, choose products that do not contain dyes or sharp, crystalline by-products that may scratch or stain. For extra traction, an application of kitty litter is a good option. After temperatures rise and the ice melts, sweep or rinse away any leftover granules to prevent residue buildup. Avoid using ice chippers, metal blades, or tools designed to break or pry ice, as these can pierce or gouge the membrane.

Routine Inspections

Winter is also a good time to perform periodic visual checks. Look for signs of drainage issues, such as standing water or ice dams around railings, posts or the perimeter of the deck. While Duradek is a waterproofing system, ensuring water can flow freely away from the surface helps maintain long-term performance. If you notice anything unusual—lifting edges, punctures, or seams needing attention—contact a Duradek-certified installer for maintenance or repair.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Duradek is built for rugged climates, and winter weather is no exception. By removing snow regularly, using safe ice-melting practices, and protecting the surface from sharp tools or heavy objects, homeowners can keep their deck in top condition throughout the winter months. With minimal effort, you can enjoy a safe, clean, and attractive outdoor space all season long—and for many years to come.
