Do Dogs Need New Year’s Resolutions?

Well, perhaps, maybe! If your dog has some bad habits or has gotten a bit lazy and gained some extra weight during the year or holidays, new habits may be in order, and the New Year is the perfect time to begin. Dogs, like humans, can get lazy, overeat, and lose energy in January with the cold; however, they still need discipline, just like us! As you begin your new routine, keep your dogs exercised, keep them on their usual eating habits, and reduce to a policy of no sweets or table scraps that may have been left over from the holidays.

YES, your dogs need to get outside even in cold weather. As long as roads and pathways are safe, get them out. Fresh air is great for canines and their human companions. If they have little fur, a warm coat may be needed, or even some dog booties if roads have been treated with harsh chemicals. You can also consider dog daycare or a walk through the mall if the temperatures get too low or paths and roads are too slick. Also remember, they were just around a lot of people during the holidays and maybe even some doggie friends, so you MUST keep them socialized. Dogs can get depressed and lonely, and some unwanted behaviors can result. If you have to leave for a long period of time, leave them puzzle games, favorite toys, a radio or TV on, and their favorite sleeping spot with a nice blanket.

When you return home, make sure that you acknowledge your pup: give them LOTS of love and reward good behavior. Spend some time with them, and even ask about their day! As silly as it sounds, they will understand you and may want to show you a new trick or how they solved their puzzle game. They will also be interested in YOUR day.

If you had a stressful day, there is nothing like the love of your dog to ease your stress. So, when you make your New Year’s resolutions for 2026, don’t forget your pooch! We ALL need new beginnings each year, even our furry friends. Dogs are born to please, so if they have gotten a little off track, help them adjust, and it’s a win for everyone!
