Has Your Success Out-Paced Your Insurance?

Many homeowners have outgrown their insurance program. I said it, and I mean it. Our agency was built on protecting the finest families and businesses in Colorado and has served this community since 1956. Over that time, both the town and the insurance industry have changed dramatically. It is very likely that your life has evolved faster than the policy you’ve had in place for years.

Habitual purchasing

Most of us are creatures of habit, especially when something seems to be “working.” You may have been with the same agent for decades; your parents may have used them before you. The question is: when was the last time anyone really checked whether your coverage still fits your life? Many personal insurance programs are written by large, captive agencies you see advertising during every football game and in between your favorite shows. Their commercials are clever and entertaining, but there is a reason they spend billions of dollars a year on advertising: to bring you into very standardized coverage programs. Their agents are trained to know their own products extremely well but are often not equipped to provide a detailed, side-by-side comparison of options across the broader marketplace. As a result, there is a very real chance that longstanding policies with the “big name” legacy companies lack the features needed to properly protect your family and your assets.

Limited replacement coverage

Most large household-name insurers are trained to lead with price. Listen to their ads: savings, discounts, bundling. No one wants to overpay for insurance, but reducing the conversation to “how cheap can it be?” is a disservice to clients and to the profession. A common example is dwelling extension coverage. Many big carriers offer only a 25% extended replacement cost on the home. In a total loss, they pay the limit on your declarations page plus that extra 25% to account for rising labor and material costs, supported by a modest inflation increase at renewal. On paper, it sounds reasonable. In reality, recent catastrophes have shown it often is not enough. After the Marshall Fire, hundreds of homeowners discovered that their coverage limits would not come close to funding a full rebuild of their homes. Many of the shortfalls were tied to policies that stopped at that 25% extension. In contrast, our agency routinely offers 50%, 100%, or even true Guaranteed Replacement Cost options. These extended protections can make the difference between rebuilding your life and facing a painful financial gap. Look for them. Ask for them.

Your success

As your success has grown, your risk profile has changed—and your program needs to keep up. A few common pressure points:

1. Estate planning changes

If you have created a trust or moved properties into an LLC at the recommendation of your attorney or accountant, your insurance should be updated to reflect the new ownership. Failing to list the correct entities can create surprises at claim time.

2. Higher liability stakes

What felt like “a lot” of liability coverage in your 20s is rarely enough once you have built significant assets. Between rising verdicts, medical costs, and inflation, affluent households typically need substantially higher liability and umbrella limits than they carried early in life.

3. Household staff

When you hire people to help at home—housekeepers, lawn services, nannies, personal assistants, butlers (maybe if you’re Bruce Wayne, please let me know if you’re the Batman)—you may be creating exposure to workers’ compensation and employment practices claims. A serious injury or an allegation of wrongful termination or discrimination can quickly turn into a large, uncovered loss if your policies have not been structured to address these risks.

4. Valuable collections

Signed memorabilia, wine, coins, stamps, fine art, and other collectibles usually need more than standard contents coverage. These items often require scheduled coverage or a separate valuables policy to be properly insured at their true value.

5. Cyber and privacy risks

More of your life than ever now lives online—your finances, your business dealings, your family’s photos and communications. Children’s social media activity and everyday online behavior can inadvertently expose the family to fraud, identity theft, and reputational harm. Specialized cyber and privacy protections are increasingly important components of a modern personal insurance program.

Why a true professional matters

These areas highlight why affluent homeowners benefit from working with a true insurance professional who is focused on their best interests. Independent agencies can access a broad range of carriers, including those that specialize in high value homes and complex personal risk. This often means better-tailored coverage, access to higher limits, and more creative solutions than you will ever see in a mass-market advertising campaign. Sometimes, we can even improve coverage and reduce costs; almost always, we can significantly improve the quality and depth of the protection around you.

At Weedin Agency, our mission is simple: we help put lives back together when bad things happen. The right time to discover gaps in your coverage is today, not the day after a loss. Let our team shine a light on your current program and help make sure your insurance keeps pace with the life you have built.
