Investing in and Caring for Custom Solid Hardwood Furniture

When it comes to buying furniture, the choices can feel overwhelming. From big-box stores and DIY assembly kits to major retail outlets, online ready-made options, and fully custom pieces, each has its place depending on household budgets and priorities.

Ready-Made vs. Custom

Most ready-made furniture offers convenience and affordability, but customization is limited. In contrast, choosing a custom-made solid hardwood piece creates a more personal investment. Buyers often select their lumber directly from the builder, starting with rough-cut boards. Craftsmen then collaborate with clients to bring their vision to life. While custom furniture requires more time to complete, the result is a unique piece designed specifically for the home.

The Living Nature of Hardwood

Unlike plastic, concrete, or metal, solid hardwood retains a degree of “life.” Furniture is typically built with lumber containing 6–10% moisture content. Because of this, proper care is essential.

  • Avoid air ducts: Placing furniture over vents can dry it out quickly, leading to cracks.
  • Maintain humidity: Keep indoor humidity between 35–55%. Within six months to a year, the furniture will acclimate to its environment, minimizing expansion and contraction.
  • Limit sunlight exposure: Direct sunlight can alter both the look and feel of hardwood over time.

Long-Term Care

To preserve hardwood furniture, apply a quality polish with beeswax twice a year. This helps open the pores of the wood, maintaining a fresh appearance and protecting the surface for years to come.

An Heirloom Investment

Custom solid hardwood furniture is more than a functional purchase—it is a personal experience and an investment in craftsmanship. With proper care, these pieces can last for generations, becoming heirlooms that carry both beauty and family history.
