January – The Knee You Were Made to Move
Every year, I hear from people who regret how they “treated” their knees when they were younger—standing too long, playing the wrong sports, or lifting too many heavy things. But it’s time to let go of that guilt. The truth is far more encouraging: the worst thing you can do for your joints is not to use them.
Research shows that osteoarthritis rates actually decrease as lifetime activity levels increase. Yes, there is a slight rise in arthritis among the extremely active, but even those individuals still have a lower incidence than people who live completely sedentary lives.
So stop beating yourself up for the way you moved years ago. You would likely be worse off today had you not lived fully and stayed active.
Move. Lift. Run. Jump. Ski—on snow or water. Hike every trail that calls your name.
Do the things you love, and do them boldly.
You’re not fragile.
You were made to move.
