Pests That Come Indoors in the Winter

Western New York winters don’t stop pests — they simply push them indoors. As colder temperatures settle in and we head into the new year, homeowners often notice increased activity from mice, spiders, and cluster flies making their way into basements, attics, garages, and wall voids in search of warmth and shelter.

Temperature swings can also cause ants and wasps to become active earlier than expected. On warmer winter days, these pests may emerge from walls or foundations, confusing homeowners who thought they were done dealing with insects until spring. In some cases, bats that were quietly hibernating in attics or rooflines can wake up and begin exploring inside the home — often making their presence known through scratching or fluttering sounds that can be unsettling.

Here’s what helps reduce winter pest activity:

  • Seal cracks around windows and door frames:Even small gaps can act as an open invitation for mice and insects. Proper caulking and weatherstripping help block common entry points while also improving energy efficiency.
  • Keep garages and basements dry and clutter-free:Damp areas and stacked boxes create ideal hiding and nesting spots. Reducing moisture and eliminating clutter makes these spaces far less attractive to pests.
  • Remove standing water from sinks, pet bowls, and drains:Pests need water to survive, especially in winter. Eliminating easy access can significantly cut down activity inside the home.
  • Inspect attics for nests or movement:Attics are prime winter shelter for rodents and bats. Early detection of nesting material, droppings, or sounds can prevent damage and larger infestations.
  • Clean up crumbs that attract ants and mice:Even small food sources can support pests during the winter months. Regular cleaning and sealed food storage go a long way.

These small, proactive steps can prevent the most common Southtowns winter infestations. If you’re noticing activity — or you’re not quite sure what you’re hearing or seeing — a quick professional inspection now can save you a much bigger headache later.
