Professional Tips for a Safe Winter Driving Season in Michigan

Now that winter is here, and it appears as if it’s here to stay, here are a few things to keep in mind for the cold-weather driving season.

Number one: Be prepared! Keep a few items in your car for cold weather emergencies:

  • A blanket
  • Hat, gloves, and an extra coat
  • Bottled water / protein bars
  • Sand / kitty litter
  • Jumper cables or jump box / battery pack
  • Phone charger
  • First-aid kit
  • Snow brush
  • Foldable shovel

Number two: TRACTION. This is the most important thing to consider during Michigan winters. Tires with less than 5/32” of tread are ineffective when there is snow on the ground. You can easily check this yourself with a quarter: if you place a quarter head-down inside the tread you shouldn’t be able to see the top of Washington’s head. If possible, a set of snow tires is your best option for safety. All-weather tires are a close second. Emergency traction devices are another item to consider if you’re not using a dedicated snow tire.

Number three: Drive appropriately for conditions. Slow down before a corner, not in the corner. Don’t make quick corrections when driving. Drive at a speed that feels safe, don’t go faster than what feels comfortable.

Number four: Fuel management! For your fuel pump’s sake, you should try to always keep your fuel level over a quarter tank. Fuel is what keeps the fuel pump cool. If you get stuck in a snowbank or traffic, having enough gas to keep your motor running for warmth or to get you to a gas station is imperative.

Have a safe and happy winter!
