Seniors Can Have Depression: Building a Support System for a Brighter Future

As the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”. Many individuals suffer from depression, including seniors. There are many possible reasons why seniors can dive into depression such as aging, reduced independence, health issues, regrets in life, traumas, loss of a loved one, domestic conflicts, and the list goes on.

Some of the signs and symptoms of depression can include loss of appetite, lack of sleep or oversleeping, lack of interest in things and or activities that used to be interesting for an individual, feelings of deep sadness and loneliness with or without reasons at all, hopelessness, helplessness, amongst many others.  If left unmanaged, this could lead to rapid health deterioration or even suicide attempts.

Isolation is one of the factors that can trigger depression amongst seniors. Placing them in an environment where they are surrounded by either family members or a warm and friendly community can help address this. Having a strong support system is key to managing depression.

Isolation is the number one reason why independent seniors decide to move into retirement homes – they have become tired of being lonely and they admit it! Living in a retirement community does not only provide them with convenience in terms of meal preparations and housekeeping but it gives them an opportunity to meet new people and socialize once more. They will make new friends and eventually enjoy doing fun things together such as playing euchre, bridge, bingo, going to groceries, outings, etc. More importantly, they will have people they can talk to about their worries, fears, sadness, or share precious life memories with. I also see some seniors take care of and look after each other. Simply put, living in a retirement home will give them a sense of “belongingness” again.
