Supporting Diners with Alpha-Gal: How Local Restaurants Are Rising to the Challenge
Over the past several years, our region has seen a steady rise in Alpha-gal Syndrome, a tick-borne allergy triggered by the Lone Star tick. As more residents receive this diagnosis, restaurants across the area are stepping up to better understand the condition and ensure that dining out remains safe, enjoyable, and inclusive for everyone.
Alpha-gal Syndrome causes individuals to react to mammalian meat and byproducts-including beef, pork, lamb, gelatin, and sometimes dairy. For dinners, navigating a menu can feel overwhelming, and even small amounts of hidden ingredients can lead to serious reactions. As restaurant owners and food-service professionals, it’s our responsibility not only to serve great meals but to create an environment where our guests feel confident in their safety.
In response to the increasing number of cases, many local restaurants-including ours-have made it a priority to research Alpha-gal thoroughly. This includes reviewing ingredient lists for potential mammal-derived additives, training staff on cross-contact prevention, and evaluating cooking processes to ensure allergen-safe practices. We’re also working closely with suppliers to verify which products are free of mammalian components, from broths and seasonings to frying oils and specialty ingredients that might not be obvious concerns.
Another key step has been expanding menu transparency. Clear labelling, symbols for Alpha-gal-friendly dishes, and the ability for guests to speak directly with a knowledgeable team member about their needs have made a tremendous difference. Our goal is to empower diners so they don’t have to guess, worry, or avoid social outings due to uncertainty about their food.
The rise of Alpha-gal in our area has certainly brought new challenges, but it has also sparked innovation, collaboration, and a deeper commitment to guest care. As we continue learning and adapting, we want those with Alpha-gal to know this; you are seen, you are supported, and you have a place at our table. We have recently added an additional fryer and select ingredients to be able to offer a larger menu variety for our guests with Alpha-gal dietary restrictions.
