The Ultimate Winter Declutter Challenge: Making Space Before Spring Arrives

As the GM of a Top-Notch Storage, I see firsthand how transformative winter decluttering can be, not just for your home, but for your peace of mind. Every year, as the cold sets in and people spend more time indoors, many realize that their closets, basements, and spare rooms are overflowing. Winter is the perfect season to tackle that clutter! With a thoughtful plan and a little help when you need extra room, you can refresh your home and set yourself up for a smooth start to the new year.

Start With the Spaces You Use Most

Winter decluttering works best when you begin where you live the most. Tackle the high-traffic areas like the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms first. Clear expired food from the pantry, reorganize your cabinets, and remove old décor. Small victories here make a big difference and build the momentum you’ll need for larger projects.

Reevaluate Your Wardrobe (and Winter Bulk!)

Winter clothing takes up a surprising amount of space. This is a great time to sort through coats, sweaters, boots, and accessories. If there are items you haven’t worn in years, donate them to local organizations who need winter gear this time of year. For pieces you want to keep but won’t need until next season, consider storing them off-site thus freeing up valuable closet space now.

Don’t Forget the “Hidden Zones”

Basements, attics, garages, and storage closets tend to be the biggest clutter culprits. I see it all the time! These areas become catch-alls for things we’re not ready to part with but don’t need in our daily lives. When these spaces become overwhelming, seasonal storage can be incredibly helpful. Store holiday decorations, summer equipment, lawn tools, or sentimental items safely out of your way, giving you room to breathe and reorganize.

Simplify Your Digital and Paper Clutter

Physical clutter isn’t the only thing that builds up. Winter offers a great opportunity to delete old files, clean out email inboxes, and organize digital photos. It’s also a perfect time to go through paperwork: sorting bills, tax documents, receipts, and manuals. Shred what you don’t need and store essential documents in labeled bins or a secure file box. A storage unit can help protect important files you don’t need frequent access to.

Create Clear Drop Zones

I always recommend setting up designated areas for donations, recycling, trash, and items you want to keep but don’t have space for right now. As your “keep for later” pile grows, that’s where a storage unit becomes incredibly useful. Instead of crowding hallways or guest rooms, move these items into a clean, safe place until you’re ready to use them.

Decluttering Doesn’t Mean Losing Comfort

Your goal isn’t to empty your home, it’s to make space for what truly adds comfort and joy. After decluttering, take a moment to refresh each area with small touches that make winter cozy: a soft blanket, warm lighting, or a favorite winter candle.

Prepare for Spring With Space to Spare

By getting organized during winter, you’ll head into spring with clarity, energy, and room for new projects. Whether you’re preparing for home improvements, gearing up for gardening season, or simply craving a fresh start, a bit of winter decluttering (and maybe a little extra storage space), can make all the difference.
