Tips for Communicating with People with Dementia

Effective communication can help reduce frustration, build trust and support the emotional well-being of individuals experiencing cognitive changes. The strategies below offer practical ways to promote understanding and comfort.

Verbal Communication

  • Use simple language. Speak in short, clear sentences. Avoid pronouns and abbreviations.
  • Speak slowly and calmly. Use a gentle, lower tone of voice. Articulate words clearly, and allow plenty of time for processing and responding.
  • Ask simple questions. Use yes/no questions; or offer choices (e.g., “Would you like tea or coffee?”), instead of open ended questions.
  • Repeat or rephrase. If they don’t understand, repeat your original wording first. If needed, pause before rephrasing the question or statement.
  • Listen and validate. Acknowledge their feelings and concerns, even when details are inaccurate. Avoid arguing or correcting them.
  • Avoid negativity. Steer clear of negative words or critical language.

Non-Verbal Communication

  • Make eye contact. Lower yourself to their eye level. Maintain gentle eye contact, to show engagement.
  • Use gestures and body language. Reinforce your words with supportive facial expressions, hand gestures and a calm, open posture.
  • Be mindful of touch. Gentle touch—like holding a hand—can be reassuring; but respect their boundaries, and avoid sudden or unexpected contact.

Environment and Approach

  • Reduce distractions. Turn off the TV or radio, and choose a quiet, familiar space for conversation.
  • Approach from the front. Always approach from the front, to avoid startling them and to help them feel secure.
  • Stay patient. Maintain calm and patience. If agitation arises, gently redirect the conversation or shift to a new activity.
  • Use visual aids. Use pictures, familiar objects, written cues or a memory board, to support understanding and recall.
